Location: north central wisconsin | I was wondering what people use to repair Weagles properly. I really don't want to send mine in due to it being special to me already with several fish this year, but I would like to get it fixed. After the first musky, lots of the top coat started peeling off. After a few more fish, much more came off, with the paint. I have noticed that it actually rides higher in the water now and pops up a bit(lost some of its swoosh). The old paint and coat must have had enough weight to keep it down. I would like to repaint, and coat with something that won't come off. I am not a big fan of envirotex, as I am not good at applying it properly myself. The 2 part epoxys have worked ok for me on lures in the past, but I would like something that I can evenly coat the lure with myself, and be confident that it will hold up. I love the lure, and want to get it back to form before my next trip this weekend. Oh, one more thing, what type of spray paint should I use to get the best adherance of the top coat?
Thanks in advance!! |

| Glad to hear it's working for ya Jason!
Go to your local Home Depot and buy the "Appliance Epoxy" spray paint. The purchase ANY clear sealer. The fish dont care abaout the clear coat.

Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | One thing I can tell you is to stop using any wood bait until you get it fixed. Hang it in a sunny area indoors (like near a window) until you are sure it is thouroughly dried out before you perform "cosmetic surgery". If you have any doubt in your mind that it may not be dry enough, wait a little longer. Good luck, and please post before and after pics. I love seeing work in progress stuff. |

Location: north central wisconsin | Ok, I'll try the appliance stuff. Clear sealer that comes in the can to brush on? I know fish don't care either way, but I thought the weight of the clear coat had something to do with the action. Maybe the pieces of stuff hanging off of it is what is making the action different now. I will peel the rest off, and redo. Hope to have her back in action Friday! |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Build mojo, fish baits that look like they've been fished before.
Baits with character catch more fish than baits without. Build character, fish baits hard, without mercy.
If your bait looks like a dog tried to eat it, you're about ready for THE ONE. |

| Jason,
No use a spray on clear sealer. It will keep the weight down. As I'm sure you've noticed tiny changes in weight kill the action.

Location: minocqua, wi. | Slamr ... you got it right man!!! i've got ole Captain One-Eye (the most exerienced bobbie on the team) lost an eye in a tussle with a big fatty a couple years ago and is in desperate need of a new paint-job. i refuse to give him a glass eye to replace the one he lost for obvious reasons. with only one eye, he's even more disadvantaged in the water and therefore attractive to fish and because of his impaired peripheral vision, he has to waggle back and forth even more than the other guys so he can see. it's his mojo man!!!! |

Location: north central wisconsin | Slamr, you've got that right!! A very high % of the lures that I use, have little paint left, or hair for that matter. They are the special ones, and my favorites, so I use them alot, taking more of the color off. the weagle just seems to need the clear to keep the water out. I figures i'd re-add some of the black paint on the back that had come off from myself peeling the loose stuff off. That said, I actually had a couple of my favorite Reef Hawgs and topraiders repainted after little was left to regognize them for their former selves, and now the action is dead. Never again!!!!
I think I will try the spray on seal. I guess I'll look for it at Menards? Thanks to beaver and all for the recomendations. I should be able to get it fixed and keep the character in place.

| Just another idea, when I have a bait that has produced well for me and I don't want to change the action but it is starting to take on water I spray on a couple or three coats of KRYLON CRYSTAL CLEAR ENAMEL and keep on fishing. Like others have said make sure you dry it well and tee or twist you're hooks. Good Luck and Good Fishing...............Doug |

| Great suggestion Doug!
I have used that as well as a few others on all my wood baits! But the Krylon seems to last the longest.
