I need some help guys…

I have always seen a lot of good press on the phantom gliders. I have several and really like the paint. I have had these for a while, so I believe they are all Todd’s original’s (pre Odyssey). I have not really played with them much until this past weekend. I fished with the 8” and here are a couple observations.

I can’t get them to glide very far side to side (compared to say an HR 8” Hughey). Maybe 1 foot each way.

When working the bait, the taps on the rod need to be a little harder than the heavier glides like Smuttleys, Amma’s, Hugheys, etc.

I tried a retrieve that was a steady medium speed and more of a light pumping of the rod as opposed to sharper taps. This created more of a side to side swimming action. This ended up being what I felt was the easiest/best way to work this bait.

How do YOU work a Phantom? Regular/consistent side to side? Erratic? Swimming?

Thanks!

ill give a few good hard taps in a row, stop for a sec and let it hang, or ill just bring it fast the whole way with medium to hard taps without the pauses. i just started using these myself, i really like em.

It depends... I usually like to pop them pretty hard, what seems like too hard, but that's how I get them to get a good side to side action. I usually work them pretty fast, so that it darts back the other way as soon as it comes to a stop. A steady retrieve gives it a side to side "swim", pretty narrow. I think you could probably even troll them. Sometimes if I'm looking for something more erratic I'll do more of a tap-tap-rip-pause-tap-tap-rip.

Great baits

Phantoms are one of my favorite glide baits out there. They are easy to work, have very little fatigue factor and they simply catch fish.

The 8 inch Phantoms are pretty simple and easy to use. I mostly use my reel to make these lures dance. Also these lures are not made to have a long sweeping glide, but a short and quick back and fouth action. I don't know what kind of rod you are using but I prefer either a 7'6 or 8 medium heavy action rod with these lures. A simple tap down while you are reeling will make these lures dance. Like mentioned above, I usually give it 3-4 quick taps then let it sit for a second or two, a few slower taps, followed by 3-4 quick taps again. Hard taps or pulls are not neccessary with these lures. Let the soft tip of your rod and the reel do the work.

The phantom is not a big gliding bait, it's more of a darting swimmer and the path is quite narrow. What you are seeing is what the bait essentially does. It's a very realistic imitation of a bait fish, great lure.

Thank guys. I think you confirmed what I was seeing/thinking. I was using the Lamiglass HR Special 6' 10" rod. This rod is a pool cue... works grat with heavy gliders, but maybe not enough tip action for the lighter baits. I will try playing around with these on a lighter rod.

I'm with Hulbert and use my reel more for these and a lot of other baits like it. I use a Abu 6500 C4 with the higher gear ratio, quick turns of the reel is all it takes.

With the one I got, LIGHT taps on some slack is what makes that girl dance. experiment in some clear water. You will get it to do what you want. one of the finer jerks out there, in my opinion.
