What is your coveted "secret weapon" lure that no one else uses, and what is your "bait of last resort" when all else fails?

When my plan doesn't pan out and I am at a loss as what direction to take, I usually pull out a bait that I like watching in the water. Most of the time that will be a oval shape glide bait.

There are no secrets anymore - the internet has assured us of that.

If I tell you, it won't be a secret anymore...

AHHH,what the heck.

A jig. If I get frustrated and can't get the fish to go, especially if I am sure I'm on 'em, I pick up the spinning rod and toss a Creature. I also use a large Violent Strike with a single large Colorado blade, and SLOW roll it when things are tough.

Used to have a secret weapon called a Wabull. Then I got one called a Castor. Hardly a secret anymore, but good lures when things are tough.

Used to be a Sluggo now it's the DeLong Kilr Eel as a last resort.

Big Game Twitch Baits, Suicks, Jigs, and Bull Dawgs are also good last resort baits

my secret weapon is so secret i dont even let anyone else in the boat see it. i take it out of the box and hook it on my line under the water over the side of the boat so nobody can see it. then i only lift it out to cast while nobody is looking!!! i usally start right out of the box with a good confidence bait and work my way from there if things are not going well i may try somthing else in the box and sometimes by days end i have a new confidence bait!!!!!! my 1-2 punch of a cobb and dawg are very very hard to beat! on a calm day throw a weagle in the mix and sooner or later there will be a fish in the boat!!!

When all else has failed and the situation has reached DEF_COM (5) I reach under the console and uncover a small Cedar box with a combination lock. After checking the area and ascertaining that no one ,even with a strong pair of binoculars can observe the combination,I will open the box and there, nestled snugly inside are three exotic hardwood baits each only 5"long,cylindrical, and tapered from front to back with diamond facet eyes,.The top one is the lightest color, cream striated with pink lines, and is tulipwood, the wood closest to water in densisty ane the one that will run the shallowest. The second lure is made from Cocoa-Bolo and is chocolate in color ,but striated beautifully with lighter lines.THis lure is for mid depth presentations..The last lure is ebony and will sink at 1.5ft. per/sec.The lure is as black as the hair of a young Italian virgin and twice as wild when dancing in the water. The action on all three lures is a series of unpredictable sideways and up and down swings followed by an incredible pause and slight shiver in the body that will turn on any Muskie with a pulse. They require no finish on the wood and allow only very slight water penetration, which only adds to the incredible action.I made them 15 years ago and they are still in perfect shape and together have caught many, many muskies.

Do you guys self flagellate or what?

My bait of last resort is also going to be my bait of first resort. I am going with the bait I have the most confidence in and the bait I feel will produce best for the conditions I am fishing. Why were you using something else to start with?

I agree with FSF.....HOLY CRAP!!!! THIS IS A FIRST!
If it's a seceret weapon and a last resort, guaranteed to put fish in the boat.....I'm throwing it all day to begin with.
However, when things are tough, and I'm not seeing or moving anything, I will go with a #5 Mepps, black with an orange blade. That's one lure that I don't throw much after opener, but I have taken fish on it throughout the season.

Just a little humour boys....Flagellate ourselves?? Geeez take it easy. FSF you must be the only Muskie fisherman in the world that will stick with one bait no matter what the results. How is the results on that approach? No one ever switched lures when the first one wasnt the answer? Interesting to say the least.Dam..... Ive been doing something wrong after 50 years and about 2000 muskies.

4" black reaper on a standup reaper head with about a 3/0 hook. Snap it sharply upward and then let it settle back down. Rip it through the weeds like that as well. You will be surprised once in a while when you rip it and a Muskie is on the other end rather than the weeds. I can't believe that I just let this one out of the bag. Did someone say severe cold front..........

Uhm...Howie, the wink icon was on...ahem, tsk....

If I throw a bait for a couple hours with no response, I am pretty sure conditions must have changed. I then go to my lures and pick out the best possible choice for THOSE conditions.

BUT, otoh, I have been known to throw the same bait all day. Just depends on conditions, it is always about conditions...

See how the trains start to take the SAME track? Now if we could just start to agree on that loaner castor you need to send down here to the southern end of the range, and the "on approval" purchase deal if it works... wait, I can feel you getting closer, your mind is wobbling, you are beginning to dream that you are Mikie, mistakenly placed in someone elses body....oh oh, that IS a bad sign...

Tough fishing, great fishing, we always work hard & have fun.
Keep our egos in check and laugh a lot.
Always come back to dock with same hat size as when we left.
Secret to BIG fish or numbers of fish for a few of my client / friends is smilpy the lure they enjoy tossing most and keeping it in the water.

Plus they love to coat them suckers with BUTT JUICE of all flavors!

Black & Silver Boo Tail

Not a last resort bait by any means.
