Starting Batteries

Subject: Starting Batteries

Off of my starting battery, I will be running a number of accessories. Two depth finders, livewell, navigation lights, stereo. The majority of my fishing is for muskies and bass, so I spend most of my time casting and running the trolling motor. The outboard will mainly be used for running from spot to spot and that's about it.

So my question is this, if I have a battery that is a marine starting battery only, am I going to run into problems by running all of those accessories off of it? Or should I make sure to run a combination starting/deep cycle battery?

I run all my accessories(LCR,Livewell, baitwell, lighting& bilge pump)off my cranking battery on my new boat and I did the same on my old boat, I have never run into problems yet. The only thing I must say is that I upgraded my cranking battery from a m27 to a m31 and the only batteries I use on my boats are Delcos, They have never done me wrong in the past.

Just the one batt should be enough, providing the charging system works properly and you occasionally top it off with an overnight charge. Just be sure to use an actuall cranking batt and not a deep cycle. The deep cycle batts can't deliver the amount of amps needed for starting and can cause starter problems on your main motor.

Hi AWH - Based on your usage pattern, I'd recommend a deep cycle w/MCA equivalent to your existing cranking only battery. BTW-just my 2 cents worth- not to start a big argument- deep cycle batteries don't cause starter motor problems. Starter problems are generally associated with a poorly tuned engine- hard starting, overcranking & over heating the starter or just plain wore out/failing starter.

AWH,

I got this off our Chapter website. It may help you decide on a solution as to which battery is right for you.
