Hey guys, I have 2 questions I need help with. 1st, when starting my big motor (Yamaha F115) my x15 goes out and then comes back on, doesn't happen when starting the kicker. This can't be good for the electronics. Any thoughts? I really don't want to run the electronics off of the trolling batteries unless I have to.
2nd, I have 2 trolling motor batteries hooked up to a 2 bank charger, but only 1 of them runs the trolling motor(12v). The other one is hooked up to the downriggers, marine radio, and something else I haven't figured out yet. I would like to rig this one of 2 ways, either on a switch so I can run the trolling motor from either battery, or in parallel so it is running off of both batteries. I don't know which is better. If I rig them in parallel will that affect the way the charger works? Thanks for any opinions.

In regards to the 1st question: there can be two reasons why the x15 drops out. #1, it's possible that it is wired to an accessory circuit of the electrical system. The accessory circuit is designed to be interrupted while the starter is cranking, one reason being is that this protects devices connected to the circuit from the nasty electrical spikes that the starter can generate. In this case, it's a good thing.

#2, the x15 is wired right to the starter battery, and it's dropping out due to the battery voltage dropping too low during cranking. In my opinion, wiring right to the starter battery isn't good for sensitive electronics like marine radios and sonars, primarily because of the electrical spikes that the starter can generate.

If this is a newer boat and/or it was dealer-rigged, you might ask them about the accessory circuit thing.

For your second question, if it were my boat, I'd wire the batteries parallel. I'd think you could then just use half of that 2 bank charger. Honestly don't know much about them - I just use a standard automotive battery charger without problem on my parallel 12V batteries.

My opinions....

Technically you should turn off any depthfinders hooked to the starter battery before starting your big motor due to the drain and spike.. However very few of us actually do this.. Your x15 is a pretty expensive unit I believe... It may be worth hooking that up to the battery your accessories are hooked up to, but there is a possibilty of getting electronic interference from the trolling motor if it gets hooked to that battery.

thanks for the replies, the X15 is wired into the starter battery, which is also the same battery that feeds the accessory panel I believe. I would hate to wire the unit to one of the trolling batteries for interference reasons and also the chance that I would run them dead and be out of a depthfinder and gps. Any other options? maybe some sort of surge protector or filter? The only other thing I can think of is to try to mount another battery and run just the kicker and fishfinder off of it.
If I would wire it to the fuse block it would do the same thing since the fuse block is on the same battery correct? Thanks for any help.
