Hey,

I'm hitting the water tonight at midnight. Most years I skip opening weekend and wait for a nice quiet mid-week day. My fishing partner is currently working nights so since he has off
and needs to stay on his sleeping schedule we've decided to hit the lake tonight (S. Wisc. Opener) at midnight. Crazy maybe but got nothing else to do this weekend anyhow. Good moon phase, storms, and warm weather tonight. I'm thinking of thumping a spinner bait and
a jointed shallow crank like a musky stalker. Any other ideas? Anyone else hitting the water tonight?

I'd LOVE to hear more about this subject.
Opening day here on Lake St Clair is a ZOO.
If there were good chances of sticking a fish or two before the clowns all show up about the crack of dawn I'd love to do it.

I was thinking noise like rattle traps and spinnerbaits/inline hair with lots of thump in the wee hours ( say 1-6 am) before it gets noisy on the lake.

Help..any advice?
Opener isn't until June but I'm itching bad.

The last Badfish vid had the guys rowtrolling in the dark and Gregg and gang trolling Mille Lacs (I'm assuming) in the dark. Both crews used planer boards. Gregg was using big Slammers and the others were using a myriad of stuff, topwater, shallow, deep diving cranks. The vid shows how effective it can be...

However, I'm not sure when exactly the Mille Lacs segment was filmed but it looked pretty cold. The rowtrolling looked like it was in June, maybe July.

I have not taken a fish before sunrise this spring on Kinkaid, but I still get on the water before the sun comes up. That's why I am up at 3:39 a.m. and am about to head out the door. We stop fishing Muskies the middle of June becouse of high water temps, but in the fall I catch a lot of fish before sunrise and once the water gets warm in the early summer. It sure is nice being on the water with no other people. Later

We are planning on doing some night fishing on Saturday, because of clear water conditions. I'll let ya know how it goes, this is an experiment for this time of year.

lobi, you are right on by thinking of using stuff with lots of noise or thump to them. Jerkbaits like burts with big rattles in them or gliders that push more water have worked well for me after last light. It can be discouraging staying out until about 4am without catching anything but it also can pay off. You might go 3 hours of just dead silence and then have a 15 minute window of activity.

Last summer I experimented with different times of the night by anchoring on a few spots that I knew held fish using a variety of different tactics...crankbaits, plastics, bucktails etc. but I had more action on gliders and loud jerkbaits. Nothing, nothing, followed by more boredom, and then all at once fish were coming out of everywhere for about 15 minutes and then nothing again for a few hours.
