| I found this posted on another board from a guy in NJ. According to this guy most of the largest fish being caught in NJ are the Leech lake strain fish from Minnesota.
My observations are from N.J. Over the years we have stocked many muskies from PA NY WI and Leech lakers from Minn. We kept one small lake Leech lake only for potential brood stock. Keep in mind the fish were bought with MI chapter 22 money before the state had a program. The Leech lake stockings were the brain child of a biologist named Bruce Ruppel a muskies inc. member. Fisrt stocked in 1990 we initialy thought they were long and skinny with big heads but now most guys realize they have the best potential for ultimate growth here and we love them. I have to credit Bruce he had a vision and it worked. The state now uses that lake for Leech broodstock. They still use broodstock from mixed lakes but keep the fish seperate. The mixed lakes do recieve pure leech lakers as well not to make this too confusing. On those lakes the Leeches do seem to attain the greatest lenths. Now I`m not sure what the situation in WI is but i don`t think stocking Leech lakers in a few select waters would hurt anything. It`s not like they haven`t been mixing up the strains up there for years. Now under the conditions maybe they won`t preform as expected due to harvest ectr. but why not give it a try. For my part i like catching a mixed bag of fish we have in most lakes. The overwhelming mojority of fish over 48" and especialy over 50" are spotted Leech lakers for whatever reason. | |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Thanks, EJ, did you go to the MI site out there? There's a picture of a Greenwood fish that is 57" that is almost certainly a spot, by far and away the largest fish ever caught there. Here's the stocking data I found a month ago for that area, keep in mind that MI did some cooperative mid 80's stocking work earlier:
