Ok, in the Bulldawg thread some said they trail a Bulldawg like a sucker. I have to admit I thought about trying this but never have. Has anyone actually caught a fish doing this? I'd like to know more on how you presented the bait. It just hangs there tail down unless you move pretty quick. Do you watch for a fish and then pick up the rod and work the bait?

Thanks,
Brian

I do the opposite bring the fish in with a bull dawg to chomp on the meat sandwich.

I deadstick a bull dawg while casting where legal, and sometimes following fish will hit it. It is like having your throw back bait already in the water.

Deadsticking a bulldawg last year, I caught a nice pike and lost about a 45" muskie right at the boat. both fish were hooked within about 5 minutes of each other. I was in MN so was fishing only one line and just letting the dawg sit there. Dad was casting so that fish may have followed his lure, though we didnt see anything, and then taken the dawg.

We were drifting fairly slowly, so the dawg was likely hanging tail down pretty good. I dont think it is going to matter to the fish.

I plan to play with that alot this fall. I see alot of potential in this presentation.

One trick is to use 2# or 4# test mono with one end tied to the top hook and the other end to a small balloon, will keep the bait upright even on dead calm days.

I have pulled bulldawg behind a few times when I was sitting in deep water ... have yet to get a fish on it ...... Too much to deal with in shallow water ....... can't hurt to have it in the water is my belief .... I read an article about it in either Musky hunter or Esox ........

I think the article Mike was referring to was Steve Herbeck's "Soft Plastic Revolution: Part 2." In it he talks about trailing bulldawgs like suckers. It was in a past Musky Hunter mag.

I pulled a Tiger Tube behind my boat for a while last year. Not a good idea when you are fishing alone and can't clear the line. It's amazing what a mess a pike can make out of 2 lines.......so I ate the sumbitch!

Dead stick a dawg while casting other baits sound interesting! Don't know it works before.
Which dawg you use fro this trick: shallow or regular? How you rig the bait, to the eye split ring only?
How your reel is set, can easily give some line?

Thanks

I have tried this and for me if its not meat, its a waste of time with many problems. Seems for this to be effective for me the boat has to be moving at trolling speeds, otherwise it mostly attracted small pikies! But that brings up a whole other topic of trolling big rubber, which has put some fish in the boat, but there again its kinda a pain to do correctly!

I'd be more inclined to trail a shallow crankbait like a Super Shad Rap. Mike Hulbert loves fishing topwater baits over deeper water and my experience on Indiana lakes is the same as his. My biggest musky to-date was caught over 80' of water while slow trolling a set of SS Raps. One even boiled on a stalled bait! They look great just buldging the surface so a shortline on a down rod would be my preference. Works great over weed beds too. Did I mention the hookup rate is great too? Oh, and the price...one of the cheapest baits in my box! Maybe that's why I have about 9 of them.

I use a regular bull dawg, but magnum bull dawgs and twin fins might work well where big gals swim

it does work, have caught a few fish doing it,with mag dogs hooked up just like you were going to be casting them.accually stumbled on it by accident(ie) left line haning in the water...but since have put a few fish in the boat doing so....not a high pecentage thing ,mostly fall orientated.but it does work ARTIE

While Ive only done this a few times and have not caught one with this method, I like to use a shallow dog for this. They seem to stay more horizontal in the water.

Ok, I'm trying it with a med. shallow dawg. I suppose it can't hurt a thing to try. Thanks for the replies everyone.
