I am just looking peoples opinions on the attached leader wire in the front of many flap tails. I am having a buddy make a couple more up for me, and was wondering if you feel it is neccessary, if it helps in the action of the lure, or if it is just something that was done on some lures years ago, and some continue to do it. He has asked if I want this, and I am not sure.

Thanks in advance!!

I would think so.I think the nose may start to dig with out it and raise the rear?Could be wrong though?

That depends on the balance of the bait. You need the lead wire to keep the nose of the bait up during the retrieve, and it also allows for tuning of the lure that otherwise would not be possible. Make it 6" long if the bait is 6", and you have it right.

I was gonna say what Steve already said. The wire allows you to custom tune the lure without problem. A slight bend up or down can change how high/low the nose runs and how the tail sits.

I think they help on most lures, though if the bait is bouyant enough you might not need it. I have a Scampertail that fish go crazy over and it doesn't have a leader on it.

Thanks a ton!! I never really thought of it as a tuning device. He weights his flap tails for balance, but even so, I feel the wire will help in fine tuning now. I'll have him do the wire the same length as the lure. Dang, I cut the wire off my other flapper last year thinking it was not really needed, and it does ride sort of funny now. Maybe he can put a new one back on it.

Do you guys tie directly to the flap tails? I would think that that might be a good idea...? Would force me to use it more on the days I tie it on, thats for sure.

Does anyone know where I can get just the tail of a Flaptail? I want to try adding one to a Phat Boy that I have.

Thanks,

page 113 of the new Musky Shop catalog. I'm sure there are other outlets, too. m
