I am looking to add a second trolling motor to my boat. As I recently bought a 12 volt Minnkota PowerDrive, and have a 2 bank 12 volt on board charger, I was wondering if adding an extra battery to the configuration posed any special considerations. I am looking at putting the 2 trolling motor batteries together in a parallel/series arrangement so that the total voltage output would remain the same, but the run time amps would increase.

Is this the best route?

Will this have any impact on my current onboard charging system. (One lead must go to the starting battery.

Help!

It will work just fine. I have that exact configuration in Sue's 1690. It takes longer for the batteries to charge, but that's about the only issue.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.

I am wondering how you connected the leads from the charger to the battery. I believe the battery configuration will be positive to positive, negative to negative, so i end up with one positive and one negative lead from the batteries. Would i then connect the charger leads to these?

Battery 1 and 2 are connected pos. to pos. and neg. to neg. Connect the charger with the pos. to battery 1 and the neg. to battery 2, or disconect the pos. between the two batteries and hook two chargers up in the normal way, one on each battery. Connect your trolling motor with the pos. on battery 1 and neg. on 2. I also use a battery switch that lets me select the start battery or the trolling motor batteries. I can start from my start battery and switch to the trolling motor batteries and keep them charged while moving to a different spot. I use a Perko switch. Later

I use a Marinco system, so I can pull 24 volt off it with a different plug if I want. I have a battery one lead, and a battery two lead for that system. Throw it to charge and plug in the charger.

Sue's rig has two batteries positive to positive and negative to negative. Her charger is positive one and negative one. No reason why Redmans' set up wouldn't work, either, I don't think! We can get several days out of the batteries if the wind isn't too horrible.
