Location: Southern W.Va. | While looking thru a Bass-Pro Mag, I came across something that I don't know the meaning of. I know what GPS means but what does WAAS stand for??

Location: lansing, il | dummy here!!! so maybe i can help. the way i understand it in plain dummy english, which is all i really understand. waas (Wide Area Augmentation System) is a satalite signal that your gps picks up that makes your waypoints more acurate. so if you buy a gps with waas capabilitys it basiclly increases your accuracy. verses a old gps unit before they were waas capable. if im wrong someone please enlighten me too!

Location: Mendota Heights, MN | WAAS uses some ground based towers with known "fixed" positions. It also uses a few special satalites to make mathamatical corrections for geo-positioning and time differentials. The thing to know is that not all areas are covered by WAAS. As more satalites get launched the area covered will increase. The goal of NASA and the US gov. is total WAAS coverage of North America. WAAS will make your unit much more accurate only if the area you are using your unit in is covered by a WAAS signal.
