Location: New Baden IL | Just got done reading one of the neatest articles yet in Musky Hunter magazine. Ken Jackson's article on guides baits that are just mauled by muskies got me thinking about a post here about our best mauled baits.
Let's post a picture of some of our best mauled baits, and use Ken's format too!
Bait:
Waters predominately fished:
How many fish caught?
Biggest?
How long have you used it?
What makes it so special?
Do you have a name for it?
Here are my two:
Bait: Straight 10" Believer
Waters: Kinkaid mostly but some Canadian Time on Lake X
How many fish caught:Over 20
Biggest: 48" my personal best
How long have you used it? Since 1998
What makes it so special? This believer has the old style rattles, and a great wandering action when trolled, and a super left-right swing when twitched.
Name: "Old Standby"
Bait: 10" Jake
Waters: Kinkaid mostly
How many fish? over 10
Biggest? 45"
How long have you used it? This jake and the beleiver were the two first muskie baist I ever purchased. Lord only knows how many since!!!
What makes it so special? This is the bait that caught my first muskie, a 45", on Kinkaid after fishing for muskies for 13 days without ever catching one.
Name: Mother... Danzig's Mother was on the radio when I caught my first one and it stuck.
Lets see yours!

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I may post a picture of it later, but I had a blackbird topraider that was my go to bait for several years. Two years ago the tail finally gave up (came apart). I had over 50 fish on that bait, up to 48". I almost cried when I had to retire it. |

How many fish caught? At least 70, probably more. I used this bait in 1985 to try to do 30 legals in 30 days on Pelican. I did a few better.
Biggest? 52", I think
How long have you used it? 24 years
What makes it so special? It's a hand made bait. One of my first.
Do you have a name for it? Dog Turd.
Here she is. This is really Beav's bait, and someday I'll be honored for him to accept it for his collection when he finally let's me give the thing to him.

You gotta give us a better picture of that beast.
What is the extra wire hanging down? A stinger rig of some kind?

Location: London, England | What sort of percentage of the fish have been caught on only the flying treble? Is that style of bait particularly bad for having fish miss it? |

Location: Kawarthas, Ontario | My most mauled bait would be a 6" jointed Muskie Stalker in the discontinued Mud Puppy colour pattern. 30% of the paint is gone from this bait. It's caught about 25-30 muskies, about 95% of those over 36", and the largest at 47". It still runs as good as the day it first went in the water (1999 if I recall correctly). It's got some pretty major gouges all over it. I know that it's only a matter of time before a big tooth is going to go penetrate the side, and I have to retire the bait.
Regards,
