Wisconsin River Trolling

I fish the Wisconsin River in the Stevens Point area a lot. I usually do pretty well for muskie's in shallow bays and below the dams but when things slow down......I have tried trolling several times without any success, I usually tried a hot colored bucktail or large rapala type lure. The stretch I like to fish has some deep water (20-24') plus a large flat that averages about 3 feet and a couple of islands as well as some long rip-rap shore. Any suggestions?? Thanks. Muskie medic, never fished the WI river but, myself I clue basicaly what you have described, deep water and food shelf.

Whats realy important is finding the level of the bait.Start from there, stay with them.Dont fish below the fish but be sure your baits are above and at the same level of the bait.Just because its a river does not mean fish are on the bottom, they suspend more than we know.Bigger baits get their attention at times.
Finding deeper and larger pools or areas is a factor also.

Good luck

Howdy,

Though I'm not a "pro", I think I can answer part of your questions. I fish/troll the areas you mentioned daily and there are a few keys that we have found. I don't really do that well with trolling for muskies on the river until about September when things start to cool down. Many of the fish are very shallow on this system(including the big ones) during the summer. The shallow areas I'm referring to are inflows(creeks, runoffs etc), turbine areas, rapids, and sloughs with a lot of slop. There are still fish tthat are trollable but with such a low population in the river to begin with, you might find better luck once most of the fish move into the channel areas(my opinion of course). I like to troll big slammers, belivers, depthraiders(shortlined) and rapalas all in the upper stretches of the river. Actuallly you can troll quite fast in this body of water and be successfull. I fish the stretches south of point, and in fall it seems when we can find deep water, rocks, and a fair amount of walleye pressure in the area, it is good for skies'. Good luck! Drop me an email some time, maybe we can go hit it this fall.
