Hi
I picked up a couple of downriggers this winter. I will be using for Lake MI salmoniods and for trolling Muskies. What rod do you use for the Muskies? Im thinking my glass 8' trolling rods would work.

Keith, your rods will work fine. I use Gander Downrigger rods, and some dipsey rods. Also, for my down rods, I use the Gander Planer board rods. Never had a problem yet.

Keith, I use a set of Shimano TDR rods for boat rods. They work fine and can handle the shock very well. Mine are 9 footers and I like them.

If you like to really "load" your rods, you'll find a 9-10' Dipsey Rod will give you a lot more punch. An 8'6" to 9' medium-heavy salmon rod is what most guys prefer to use. An 8' will work if its got the backbone to set the hook and handle the fish. (You don't want to be using too light a rod and overplay the fish.) You may have to tighten up a little on the release setting if you're using adjustable releases to compensate. The heavier dipsey rods let you horse the fish a little and get them in quicker.

Regards,

Hiya,
Steve's right on - Dispsey Diver rods work great. Good for non-rigger trolling too actually. Shimano TDRs are good too, and they're cheap as all get out. For dipsey rods, the Shimano Teloras are nice, and if you look around you can find 'em for about 65 bucks...
