What features should I look for when buying my first Digital Camera?  Is there a waterproof yet user friendly model available?  Thanks in advance.

i have a olympus stylus 400, it is weatherproof not waterproof! it can get wet but not be submersed in water. it has 4.0 pixels which im told, the pixels are what make the quality of the picture better, higher pixels means better quality. i really dont think you need anything over 4 or 5 pixels uless you do alot of 8x10 and bigger blow ups. heres a pic with the stylus

Olympus Stylus 300 or 500 - are water resistant - but I hear do a fine job for digital muskie photography. The 300 has 3.5 MP and the 500 has 5.0 MP. Olympus C-740, 750, 765 have the 10X optical lense which is awesome - that's worth looking at also. The MP's are a little lower on the C-740, 750 and they are not water resistant.
If you a true waterproof camera - that's not a problem as you can buy a $200 sealed box that allows you to work the camera underwater - for many of the digital cameras - they have an glass high quality lense for that box.

Good luck.

Maybe waterproof is not the correct term.  Then again, with a 5 year-old in the boat, it might be important!  Most if not all prints I'll make will be 3"x5".  Ease of use is important to me (that 5 year-old may take some photos).

Stylus 300 new off the net is less than $200. My friend has that camera and he loves it - he also has some real hig-end 35mm gear. Says the 300 is an excellent camera for 3X5, 4X6 and even 5X7 formats. Probably can't push much bigger.

Good luck.

if you want quality pictures, especially when you crop them or enlarge them on your computer for printing out, it is VERY important to get the most optical zoom possible. the digital zoom isn't important for clarity - all it does is make the picture bigger, not zoom in closer. don't be "wowed" by megapixels.
get the most optical zoom you can afford. the difference between a $150 and $350 camera is HUGE when it comes to those kinds of features. if you fish alone, consider looking for a timer as well...
ask yourself how you will use it...do you want snapshots or pictures?

the pics below demonstrate the advantages of optical zoom.
digital zoom will get fuzzy on details if the camera doesn't have a quality lens.
these were taken with a $350 Olympus C765...10x optical zoom, 4.0 megapixels.

I have an Olympus C-725, 3.0 pixal and 8x optical zoom. Great camera especially when I paid only 199.00 for it. It is a last years model but are still available as a friend bought one last month. If you can't find something locally or just want to see whats out there check out B&H Video, they have lots of cameras and some of the best prices around.

nice shots lamb. yes good point about timers. the stylus 400 has a built in timer and also a cordless remote that you can use, so its pretty versitle that way.

another vote for the olympus stylus 400/410. it can be found for under $300 up to around 350. It is water resistant not proof, but has held through several rainy fishing trips with no trouble.
