Are you talking about Snodlow, Dog Turd, Heddon Vamp Splashtail style lures? If so, no, no weight is necessary and in fact can cause problems getting the bait to do what it needs to. I'll be happy to show you the 'best' hanger assembly for the tails and the stinger I designed, let me know if your'e interested!

Hey Steve,
I was thinking of trying to make a couple flaptails this winter and was wondering if you would share your thoughts or ideas with me as well. I made several years ago where I had spreaders on each side of the tail and the tail would hit them on occasion and make noise. Seemed to work pretty good for hooking fish. Those were made with bodies more akin to a creeper body, a little stockier than what standard flaptails look like. I made them thru wire with a brass flap tail. I gotta dig around in the garage to try and find one of those but I think I may have got rid of all of them.
Any ideas or thoughts you have on them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Corey

ChadG,
Thanks for finding that old post. I copied the picts over and will use them for reference. That stinger hook is more of a dredge than a stinger!!!!! I need to find one of the original ones I made and take a pict of the hooks on it. Back in the late 80's I took a hawg wobbler, removed the rear hook and put on a flaptail. Oh man that thing used to get rocked by fish . . . . but it did not hook worth anything and that is where I came up with the idea of spreader hooks on each side of the flapper.

Here are some Beaverturds that I made. I didn't use the bent hanger/cotter pin thing,
I attached them to the lure by screwing in a swivel with a split ring and blade on the other end.
They catch fish in all sorts of conditions, but I think where they really shine is at the end of
the retrieve. When you get a fish to follow a Turd, just take it down with your rod and work it
in a figure 8 just like you would a bucktail. Fast and downward on the straightaways, and then bring it up on the corners and hold on!
Love them Turds.

One thing that I noticed about hooking fish on these lures, is that 16" pike are guaranteed to get hooked with both trebles, but big fish are a different story. It's hard to make a lure that won't have the hooks getting in the way of the blade. Good fish tend to engulf it, so I'm thinking of just going with a 5/0 treble that will extend from the front hook eye to the back one. Then I'm going to "T" it and let it fly. I think that my hooking chances will go up if I go up in hook size, maybe even a single 6/0 treble. Right now I'm using 2- 3/0 round bend trebles that are "T"d, but it still is not a high quality hooking lure for me. I've caught largemouths, smallmouths, rockbass, pike, and have had mid 40" skis come up and chomp on it and I come up empty handed. I know for the most part that top waters are my worst hooking lures, but the flaptails are the worst in that catagory. It is a great lure and easy to work. I gave a few to a friend who guides in MN, and he said that last year it was one of his top producers. Though he originally gave it to clients to use because it is pretty much idiot proof, he had good success with it. He increased the hook size, and said that it was worth some tangled hooks in exchange for more hook ups.

If anyone has a copy of the Detloff surface bait book, there is a pic of the Wick flap tail in it. I'll try to get my hands on it again.

Question for a rookie. Does the Spinner spin like a bucktail? Is attached with a rotating swivel or a swivel that will not allow it to rotate?

Joel's flaptails are not available in any store. Joel custom makes about 100-200 baits a year.
You have to contact him directly at [email protected] I have his private phone number as
well. PM if you want it.

Great baits, you don't find his creepers/baits in Dick Pearson and Steve Herbecks boat for nothing.

His flaptail was nailed this past year by a 39lbr on the Chip and a 35lber on a MN lake. Many
other big fish as well. Through wire construction, big heavy brass tail which creates a very
deep bloop and throws a nice splash of water straight up about 12-24" inches. My biggest
in 2001 was landed on one as well. The store models (slo-mo's, moore's,etc.) don't even come
close.

Joel is swamped right now with past orders he's completing.

Musky Joe- Good question. In my opinion you dont want the rear tail spinning. Work it slow slow and then slower just so that heavy brass tail is swishing back and forth.Deadly that way. Maybe others work it differently and can add something, but the sublety is the thing as far as im concerned with these baits. Some of the commercial versions of the bait such as the HI_Fin and Morre Models lack blade weight; ect. I havnt seen Joel Wicks model, but sounds awesome.Id love to see Worrells version-Wheres the pic?
