Hello, curious what people know about this lake. I am considering a trip there mid July this year. The westend sounds to be the place for muskie. Is it similar to LOW in numbers and such? Just curious over all. I will be taking a begginer and would like for them to see some fish..... Thanks for the info...Ben

Fished Nippising for eyes a couple years, in the early 80's. Did great! Fished the west end. I think this is the English River? What they call a river is basically a huge lake with a zillion islands, and current that feeds the main lake.

We hired a guide for the first day. He was the Bro-in-law of the bait shop owner. Still remember his name. Archie Stevens. Knoew the lake, and every island like the back of his hand. First time he had ever seen a depth finder, a Lowrance flasher.

Sorry, can't help on the ski action, but as I remember it, I think it would be some awesome water for it.

We go every year or so to the "West arm" portion of the lake. Generally in early July. Never fished LOW, so have no comparison, but you should see some fish. The group has had good success propwash trolling bucktails in the cabbage filled bays. Where are you staying? I might be able to give you some starting points.

Ontario has a new web site for fishing info with a number of lodges and guides.

www.ontariotravel.net/gofish

Hope this helps.
I was also at the Ohio Musky show last year and the guys booth next to us was on the west end and mouth of the French River. Can't recall the name, but if he is here this year I will post it.

Thanks, I am tossing around the idea to go to the goon trip, but it is a 24hour or so drive for me. Given a limited time availability, the 12-13 hours to this lake maybe more doable. Just don't want to end up on an "Eagle Lake" type lake...if that makes sense. Eagle isgreat but not for the guys that would be coming with me....so to speak...Ben

Ben, you can try posting your question at an Ontario board where many members fish Nipissing. The addy is http://www.ontariofishing.net/cgi/messageboard2/view.pl?board=board...

There's lots of friendly guys there who I'm sure will help you out. They can probably recommend a lodge or two.

Ben, I've never been on Nippissing, but I have heard it can be tough. But like I said, that's just what I've heard. In any case, if you want to catch a ton of fish, but aren't worried about a hog, look at the kawartha chain.

BenR,

Nipissing can be tough at times, It is not a system where you will move a lot of fish like LOTW or other popular NW Ontario waters(though thier are axceptions some days). The ones that do show up though, mean busines and are usually good sized. There are basically three sectors on Nipissing that anglers look to for muskie.. The West arm/West bay region(probably the most popular, shallow mesotrophic water), the South shore area and the Upper French River where I spend my time. The Upper French does not have the look or feel of a river, It has many large expanses of open water, bays, channels and islands, as does the other two areas(Upper French has the deepest water by far). I do not know much about the rest of Nipissing except that there is tons of open water as this is the 4th or 5th? largest inland lake in Ontario. Keep in mind fishing pressure is quite heavy, especially in the summer, the big city of North Bay shadows the northern shore of Nipissing, Sudbury lies not far away and Toronto is about 4 hrs. south.
Still this is very"pretty" water typical of other shield lakes and can cough up very large muskie and northern pike( I have pics posted on the photo album section of this site,pg. 12 or 13 slimeballs french river...)
The above post about the other web site is a good idea if you want more info, most of those guys live in the area and know alot more about where to stay and fishing info, they are good guys and will help you out.
Hope this helps!
