| which one do you guys use. I have used spiderwire stealth with no complaints. Also, I was told that if you use power pro, you should run the line through a wet towel as you reel it on the reel to take coating off line. Suppose to make line cast better? Has anyone else heard this because that was first time I have. Just bought another 6500 and need to respool because water and weather here in Ky. are about right. |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I have used 80 pound Power Pro for the past 5 seasons with zero failure. It is a good idea to run it through a wet towel when you are spooling your reels to take off the extra coating. This will help you have less "gunk" on your reels after your first few days of fishing with it.
Like mentioned above, make sure you put either a good amount of mono backing on your reel first. I usually fill the reel up pretty full with the mono backing. Saves you money by not putting a bunch of unused Power Pro on your reel. |

| Just have to go by what I see on the water, and last year I saw Power Pro break eight times. Enough proof to me. I have used Cortland Spectron 80lb for the last eight years, NEVER had a breakage or line failure. That is about 1600 days on the water.
I highly recommend Cortland Spectron 80lb Green!

Location: NeverNever Lake | The first time I used PowerPro was with an 8'6" Lamiglas rod. It made so much noise going through the guides I couldn't stand it. Didn't care how good it was, it came off that reel.. Been using Spectron for years without a turkey fit! I think the Spiderwire Stealth is also an 8 yarn braid like Spectron, Vs the 4 yarn braid of PowerPro....... |

Location: Oregon | I have used PowerPro exclusively for salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon up to 10' in length over the last 5 years or so and have yet to see it break a single time. I have tried the new spiderwire once and it is working well so far. I haven't tried the Tuff Line XP because of its low score in the line test done several years back....the original Tuff Line scored well in this same test.

Location: Oregon | Hi Plitz,
I have a copy of the magazine around here somewhere but can't find it! I did an online search tho and here is a link to the info that was included in the magazine:
http://www.sportfishingmag.com/article.jsp?ID=23589&typeID=347&cate...
The only problem tho is they didn't include the tables that show where each line ranked out. This test was the most scientific I have read yet. They had machines that duplicated each test for lots of different lines and each line was put through the same process. As I recall tho XP didn't do as well as some of the other braids. The original Tuff line tested out the best of the braids. In generaly the braids showed a higher tensile strength than monos but scored much lower in abrasion resistance. It was some great info, wish someone would repeat the test again with some of our new lines. I will keep looking for the magazine and if I find it will send you the info.

Location: Contrarian Island | I've used regular Tuf Line 80 lb forever and like it the best..I tried PowerPro...didn't like it. I hear the Stealth holds much less water for that early or late season fishing and may try that. |

| Cortland Spectron 80 pound test is best, but I have never had a problem with 80 pound Power Pro either |

| Got a question when putting on the backing. Anyone got a suggestion as an easy to put Mono backing on? Most of my spools are different and have different capcities. I always run into the problem of not having enough mono on and the primary line doesn't fill the spool up enough and vise versa having on too much mono and not getting enough of the primary line on. Last year I went to a park unspooled a whole reel of my primary line put the mono on and if it was too much/too little, unwound it all, etc. Very very time consuming and I probably looked like an idiot with line laying all over the place..... |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | With larger reels, Like Abu Garcia 6500's, or Tica 200's, or whatever reel you are using, you can fill the spool half way up with mono, and have plenty of space left for your braided line.
With the smaller spools, 5500's, you should fill it up 1/4 of the way. |

| Love the 80lb Power Pro. I always fill mine at a place that has it in bulk, thus avoiding the problems of not enough/too much left on spool deal. Gander and Rollie's offers this service.

You can buy it in Bulk from BassPro or Cabelas and save way more than bringing it to Gander or anywhere else for that matter. |

Location: north central wisconsin | A couple snap type breaks on casts a couple years ago with 65lb pp was enough for me to switch. I love tuff XP 80 and have it on most setups, great price too. I like the stren power braid too, but it is a bit pricey. Hopefully it goes down this year. |

| Chad Cain, i'd image the power pro breakage you saw was on clients reels? (not yours?) like 30, 40, 50, 65 pound test line throwing 2,3 4 or 6 ounce lures? or was it 80 pound/100 pound line that was breaking? maybe your clients were throwing musky baits with bass line.
was the line breaking on fish, snags, backlashes? in mid cast?

| I have to lean toward 80# and 100# spiderwire stealth. Its tuff as nails, holds less water than Power Pro and costs less.
They are both excellent lines however. I like them both. |

Location: Madtown, WI | Ok got a question-
I used Tuff Line for a couple years then switched to PP last year....liked it for the most part....BUT
Tell me more about Spectron....Price?? How much water does it hold compared to PP?
How does it behave compared to PPro? I don't think I have ever looked at the spectron so don't know what the fiber make up looks like.

I used powerPro once a few years back and
decided I liked Tuff better for a variety of reasons.
Line choice should be a personal thing.
All the major brands are good, just pick the one you like the best and go with it.

| I prefer the Stealth over anything I have used so far. Holds less water and makes less noise going thru the guides than any other I have used.
How about just giving your opinion and leave the attacks out. It is hard enough to get guides opinions and help around here without that crap. |

Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | I know the thread is titled power pro or spider wire , BUT, just my 2 cents here.... six years fishing with 50# fire line and narry a single line or knot failure. Abraisions I feel were no more an issue than with lines used by my partners. I tried the spider wire before getting the fire line and found the spider wire unusually difficult in clearing backlashes and got rid of all of it, 5 reels worth, after only half a season. Sorry I've never tried Power Pro. |

| Again, I just go by what I see everyday on the water. Yes, all the break offs with Power Pro last year were on clients reels. The pound test they were using varied from 50 all the way to 80lb. One client had just spooled brand new 65 pound, the night before, had it break off on a cast(loosing one of my FAVORITE Llungen Tales) and then had a ~43" hit on a figure 8, and then POW, line broke!! I also saw the 80lb break a couple times when they got backlashes as well. Totally lost any confidence in that line from those experiences!!
I feel I put a pretty darn good test to equipment with as much as I fish every single year, probably more than just about anyone with the HAZARDS of my occupation. HA,HA Seriously though, in the last eight years of 200+ days on the water, never had a failure with 80 lb Cortland Spectron. HONESTLY!! I have had the 50lb break a couple times in the stump fields of Kinkaid many years ago, so I switched to nothing but 80lb.
I know many of you guys love Power Pro, but just be careful with it. I don't trust it after what I saw last summer. Just my observation! I am not trying to bash it. Maybe my clients just got bad batches of it, who knows. There are plenty of people who don't have problems with it. But you aint taking Spectron off of my reels for nothing!!!!!!

| Chad,
It could be your clients equipment is not up to snuff and is nicking the line or it could be the line is VERY old. The latest Power Pro is outstanding. I don't fish as much as you but I log 130-160 days on soft water and my cliets normally use my equipment. I am not sponsored by any line company so I don't have a biased opinion either. Power Pro is simply a great Line.
I use 80# Power Pro on all my reels and have never had a break off. If there is a nick or line fray I cut it off. I change line normally once a year although it just depends on which rods get the most use. HONESTLY, I have NOT had any problems with Power Pro! |

| You could be right about the equipment problems. No doubt about it. Never really thought of it that way. I am glad to hear that you have never had any problems. I know I wouldn't let them throw my bread and butter baits on their equipment after that!!
The biggest thing is that we need to get people to use good quality line, no more of the dacron or mono, that just leads to problems. I also hate to see people trying to use 30lb braided line. WHY?? That line is TOO thin and breaks way to easy! In this day in age of awesome technology, why not use super braids in 80lb test so you don't have to worry about line failure and fish swimming around with baits in their mouths!! Confidence is the name of the game. I could hook a 100 pound muskie with the line I use and it would NEVER cross my mind that my line would fail. What an awesome feeling! Other stuff might break, but not my line!
No matter what brand you prefer, use the heavy stuff. 80lb !!!!! Muskies aren't line shy!!

| KARLOUTDOOR, I also liked the 50lb. FireLine but unfortunatly it is no longer made. I liked the fact that it was stiffer and didn't backlash as easily as a lot of the braids. Lately I have been using Stealth and Stren Super Braid and like them quite a bit but I still like my 50lb. FL. Thankfully I still have about 10,000 yds. of 50lb. and 3000yds. of 65lb. left! |
