| See that Musky fishing re-opened Jan.1 till March 14 here in Pa. My question is if a creek is not iced over or with some ice, will a musky still feed under these conditions or do they shut down?
It worth the effort to throw a fews casts into some of the still open pools and if yes what type of lure or live bait should we use?
Still Fishing,

| matt, wish there was some open water here, but we're all froze up. I've had some (very limited success) in the winter in streams. I would stick with a jig, worked on the bottom for the most part. Also, if we get a warming trend, which i'm praying for, I have caught fish in shallow water adjacent to the deep pools. A white jig and grub has been the best color for me. Also, I've done well in a warming trend throwing spoons real slow. good luck, it's hit or miss this time of year. Also, as with always when your fishing a stream, work the area thoroughly. | |

| Matt,
Call The Fish Education Center and talk to Howard Wagner,he can set you up with the Info you need.Exactly what is working, where, how and when,he and others from his shop live on the streams in Pa this time of the year.I know they use jigs mostly, flat siverdollar design, bounceing bottom in the deeper holes, the end of the jig usualy has a white grubtail.Best to start on spots that have produced in the past under the colds water conditions upon us,give Howard a call at 724-452-4464, go ahead and mention that I gave you the number as well.I have not had the chance to get to the streams in Pa yet,so I'm not in tune with whats going on to help you myself at this time. | Hey, don't think fish shut down in cold weather, at least not all together. the water in most streams in this area
{southern W.Va.} may have ice alone the banks and some of the calm pools may be froze over, but water with some current generally keeps water open . We seem to do good in the deepest open water thats around.Watched a man catch a 48 1/2" fish in '92 from a sandy beach that dropped off into about 20-25' of water . Just a little eddy below a rocky shoal that was about 6' deep. It created a current that kept the water open, the water was froze over 60-70 yds. downstream. A 41" was caught in the same area Dec. 28th , 2 weeks ago. On a bucktail, 37 degree water. 48"er in '92 was caught on a 4"creek chub and a #1 hook, walleye fishing. Snowing and maybe 20 degrees if I remember right. To me ,Nov, thru March, is trophy time here. Lakes are froze over here but I have a trip planned next week to 1 of 2 streams within 50 miles from home and will just be walking the banks with about 7 or 8 lures and fishing anywhere from 3 to 10 feet of water. I believe I can catch them and I know the fish are there. Jerk baits , crankbait, jigs, spinnerbaits and bucktails all will catch fish. Just remember that strike zones are much smaller. Keep on plugging ,the fish are still there and will hit if you can get it in their faces.

| P & J,The coldest water I have caught and landed a ski in was 33.9 deg. according to my X-85! I have found that the fish will eat BUT,smaller/slow was definatly the key.Buc`s and medium size jerks seemed useless. The largest size Husky-jerk and a weighted/suspending baby Shallow-raider are the only baits that I have had success on!(my own concocktion)Rubber will probably work but I am the wrong person to answer that one!Remember just cause there is current at the surface does not mean that there is current at the bottom.Fish all areas that look classic but also check long straight flat streches that look plain, cause one small rock on a long flat stream can save the day!Small water can be FANTASTIC,just keep plugg`in! Wish I was! Jeff | |
