I am wondering if other muskie fisherman are as superstitious as I am?

I often wear the same clothes that I caught a fish wearing from a previous trip or from the previoius day. I also have a wrist bracelet that I have had on for every musky trip for good luck.

I was looking at my fish pictures last winter and made the comment to my wife that "my raingear must be lucky, I have it on in alot of the big fish pictures in my album."

She responded with, "maybe its the weather that's making the fish bite, and the raingear isn't lucky at all".

I quit looking for good luck charms after that.

i caught my first fish this year (which turned out to be my personal best) after having my Musky Nut hat fly off into the lake.
since then i've dipped my lucky Musky Nutter in the lake before heading out at the start of every trip...

sometimes lucky beats good.

I almost always wear a Guinness ball cap I purchased in Dublin, Ireland about 8 years ago. Ever since my return from that most holy of Holy Lands (St. Jame's Gate Brewery), I wear it when fishing muskies. Except for frequent submersion in lake water, it's never been warsh'd. Had to spice it up a couple years ago with a little bling, so it's now adorned with an old gold fish hook.

I suspect that there's probably an antidote for some serious illness growing in that thing by now... but I think the funk gives it character. And it seems bring me some pretty good luck to boot.

I tried articles of clothing and hats but no consistentency...However my dog Lucky is 2 for 2 with me but I usually end up yelling at him the whole time for getting in way and scratching my boat.

I had a ritual which never worked. On the way to one of my favorite lakes I drive by
an outdoor chapel. I use to roll down a window and toss a donation into the field. I think God got angry with me littering money all over the place because not once did it ever work. I also use to have a saying about how all the tumblers in the universe were clicking into place. This was usually stated around an approaching storm front or while the moon was setting etc. It got to the point that whenever I said it my fishing partner would groan and say we were doomed. So neither ritual worked. I just fish now. To hell with lucky charms. Ha, Ha!

At the beginning of everyday, I touch the rod handles just above the reels three times while saying a stupid shhhh sound with a stuffed animal my daughter gave me. The first time I did this was on day one of a tournament and ended up with a 4 fish day.

Who knows. It still works and gives me confidence at the beginning of a day and any edge helps.

That's it!! Mr Pike hit it on the nose. Every muskie I've ever caught since fifteen years of age was the result of dip. Now I just have to convince kernal frost bite (wife) why I'm spitting again.

I am screwed now. I quit chewing at the Pittsburgh show a few weeks ago after 15 long years of doing it. It was always a ritual for me. I would launch the boat, go park the truck, and while I was walking back down to the dock I would throw a big fattie in my lip. Last summer I did well when I borrowed a different flavor chew from clients. I got a 52" that way!! I don't know what I am going to do now, I may never catch another muskie!!

I sleep w/ a Mr. Potato Head under me pillow the night before a fishing trip; if his hat is pointing north the next morning, I'll go fishing. When they first came out YEARS ago, you had to use a real potato, which was nice, 'cause you could make hash browns outta them the next morning, thus serving a duel purpose. As of now, I've yet to fry up a plastic one, although you can use the same one over and over again, so I guess there are good things to say. If there is ever another potato blight, I'll at least have the plastic potato heads to give me direction>>>

Rats,
I was going to speak of my lucky "haven't been Killed shoes" but somebody beat me to it.
I'm thinking of wearing a pair of wool long handles untill I catch the next one, and not taking them off until I do.
I used to wear the same hat whenever I caught a fish and keep it on untill I got skunked, but I ran out of hats..
Now I think I'll just put exactly 29.50 worth of gas in the truck and call that my ritual.
I'm sure I'll be burning up that much gas anyway this year, and I might as well get some pleasure out of it.
I'll take any wager that Chad Cain still catches a fish even if he's not dipping.

Lucky red G-Loomis hat...

I also keep a horse shoe in my boat....

I also have a voo doo skeleton charm strung to my Lakewood zipper handle.....makes all my baits magic.

I dip the net and say "we ain't catchin sh!t today" before we start casting.

I guess I have a few charms and rituals....didn't realize I was so superstious

Hey Rodney, I also have a lucky campsite I have never been killed at. I'll Let you use all the lucky accomodations for $28.00 a day, and that includes all the dead shad you can eat if you catch them yourself! You save a buck and a half a day, but if I'm there you ain't sleepin' in the tent with me if you have those unwashed woolies on! I got to get to bed so I am rested for all the Muskies I'm going to boat tomorrow. Tuff job, but somebody has to do it. That 55 incher is history! I'm wearing my Lucky derby tomorrow, AAHHHR ! I be lookin' for the Great White Musky, have ye seen her? Later- P.S. I think it is time to start a spring report, after all we live in balmy Southern Illinois. 32 degs. and still snowing, plus we have fog! I might have to wear my lucky snowshoes in the boat tomorrow! What's a pirates favorite lure maker? Fred AAhhhrbogast! Say goodnight Gracey. Good night.

I fished with a guy once who brought a loaf of bread with him. Before we could hit the muskie spots we wanted to fish he demanded we go after some northern first. Once the first northern was caught he pulled out a piece of bread for both of us and insisted that we wipe the slime off of the fish with the bread and eat the bread to improve our karma. I politely declined and have never been in the boat with this nutcase since.

I have a net that is an unlucky charm!! It seems that everytime the net is not in the boat (like someone forgot it). I catch fish. Of course when it is in the boat it's a 50/50 thing at best.

Raze, the Dr gave me some good medicine to get rid of those.

Just the lucky slime crusted, sweat glazed, falling apart Tissot hat for me. Has been very good to me, and I told my wife when I get my Musky Nut hat, I would retire it, but not so sure I can. It will at least be in the boat with me. Those lucky enough to have been graced by it's presence can tell you the essence it carries.

On that note, last year I wrote an article for Muskie Magazine about fishing hats. Those of you that are MI peeps should re-read that sucker for some good hat carma tips.
