For the last several years I have been going to Chetek with some guys panfishing the last week in September and the first week in November. After a week of catching 150 to 200 crappie a day I am bored out of my mind. It's bad enough that I am missing the start of Musky fishing at Kinkaid. This year I am fishing Muskies the second week and would like some info on Rice and Island. I have fished Shell, but want something closer. I also was not impressed with Tater Lake. Later

Don't forget about Potato Lake or the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. From Chetek, Both are just a bit East on Highway 8. To be honest, they are better options. Both are closer than the drive up to Shell. You will not be missing much by skipping Rice Lake. Never fished Island.

Location: Eau Claire, WI
Look me up next season and if you email me or call me I'll be happy fill you in on the local bite. I guide most of the lakes on Hwy and 40 and fish Rice a handful of times each season.

Rice, or most of the Blud Diamond are lakes on Hwy 40 are fun to fish and give opportunity for Musky action.

Red Man,

The man to speak to about Rice would be Greg Morse. He works in Rice Lake at Crystal-Pierz Marine 715.236.2628.

I have fished Potato, Amacoy, Holcombe, and Dairyland, which are all within 30-45 minutes of Chetek. All are good options, with Holcombe and Dairyland being flowages with more acreage. Musky Bay in Potato has got a lot of muskies in it, although Potato can get a nasty bloom going in the summer. Water gets extremely green. Island has clearer water, but from what I was told can be good, although I've never fished it. If you need any more specifics, send me an e-mail.

Hi everyone,

I can't help you with ethier of the lakes your mentioning but like Air muskie say the Dairyland in Ladysmith is a very good option I grew up on that water and for musky fishing state side its wonderful. I would try to hit it during the week so you limit the fishing pressure. If you need some information e-mail me at [email protected] I'll answer any question that I can.

Thanks

Dave

Hi,

I have personally fished both Rice Lake and the Island Lake Chain both are good waters. Personally I like fishing the Island Chain and the other gain of lakes in the Hwy 40 area. The Island Lake chain has a ton of different structure to be fished. I would get a hold of Mark Hintz, he is a great muskie fisherman and very knowledgable about the Hwy 40 lakes.

Thanks Mark, I just might see what you are doing this fall. Greg sent me some info about Rice. I like the structure and depth of Island. Potato had a bad bloom on it the only time I fished it exept for the deep end. Seems as though the bloom is still bad the last of September and first of November on the shallow lakes. We have been going to Chetek for six or seven years and it is better some years than others, but always there. Last fall was unreal. Never thought I would see it that warm at that time of year. We always stay at Outers, hated to see Gary and Peggy sell, but we always see them when we go. They sure are good people.
