Soaking Suick's?

Subject: Soaking Suick's?

I read some time ago on one of the boards about soaking your Reef Hawg's to make them waterlogged so the don't rise so fast. As it turns out, my Reef Hawg ( I only have one) is already pretty neutrally bouyant. However, some also suggested doing this to your Suick's, too. I think mine rise too fast, sometimes almost jumping out of the water, so I thought, "Great idea!"

Well, I've been soaking them for over a week, and it hasn't seemed to make any difference. I tried them out a local lake last night and they seemed as bouyant as ever.

Is there some trick to this? Should I remove a bunch of the paint . . . They already have a few places were the paint is scraped off from the hooks, so I thought this would be sufficient. What am I missing?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In order to really soak up water, one should remove the finish and sand the surface, but I do not like doing that with a really bouyant bait. I feel you are better off to lead weight a suick, or buy a weighted one.

I also never liked the way that they popped right back up, so I weight my own. I tried some of the weighted Suicks, but I think they put too much weight in them and you get no rise at all. You can buy weighted ones and then drill out some of the lead until you get a rise rate that you like or you can weight your own.
For 10"ers I usually use a 1/2 or 3/4 ounce barrel sinker and drill a hole between the two front hooks. You can balance it on your finger to more or less find the center of gravity, and then drill there. That position usually gives them a slower rearward rise. Too far forward and they pop up almost butt up which I don`t care for. For the 9`s, use either a 1/2 or 3/8 ounce.
It takes a little experimenting, but you can get them to back up nice and slowly. Beav

I know this is going to sound funny, but I'm power tool illiterate (sp?) What other options are there for weighting baits other than drilling into them? I thought I saw something about lead tape one time??? Does that ring a bell with anyone? If so, where do you get it? How do you use it?

Thanks,
Bill

You could try using some of that self adhesive lead strip they sell for making fake stained glass windows. The glue sticks fairly well and you can always bang a tack through it to help it hold.

Good fishing

Hi,

I haven't tried it but have heard of guys wrapping solder around hooks for more weight. It would be easy to undo if it didn't work.

The barrel sinker idea definitely works. I drill the hole and then use a screw through the barrel sinker and screw the weight in. It seems to work pretty well, but you will have to experiment with weight placement.
