Just curious - thinking of entering bass and muskie tournaments.. Can you get help from sponsors to flip the bill for the entry fees? If os, how does theta work, what do you have to do and how much do you pay them if you win?

It's difficult yo find a sponsor that pays entries, but it can be done. The biggest mistake most tournament anglers make when asking for sponsorship is the old " I'm fishing the entire XXXXXX Circuit! If you pay for it, I'll put your logo on my boat!" Or: "I'm fishing the XXXXX Circuit, and I'm a Pro. If you give me a boat and motor and trailer, I'll use it for the events!"

That'll get you a blank stare.

The prospective sponsor needs to be sure you know how to market yourself and your sponsors. You need to know how to promote when at a tournament and when you are not. Many anglers assume winning will magically do something for their sponsors; it won't. It's entirely up to you to ensure your name and your sponsors logos are presented constantly to the fishing public in a positive manner.

Sponsors don't look for any return if you win, that's your money. They DO expect that the win will be VERY highly publicised, and that their logo will be a large part of that publicity.

Very simply put: It is not what they can do for you, it is what you can do for them.

If you are just looking for some free money, good luck finding it.

If you are in magazines, doing seminars, attending sport shows, blah blah blah and have access to a lot of people, and are willing to promote their products, if you are willing to go to 20 different tackle shops, retailers, whatever, and talk to them about their product and see if they will start stocking their product, if you are willing to work for the money they give you, it can be done.

Nobody is going to give you money just because you ask. You need to prove to them what you can do for their business. It is not about you, it is about promoting a company and helping them.

So true, most will laugh you out the door. However it can be done but requires something back mentioned above. I work for a fortune 300 company who sponsored me in the Simply fishing tourney picking up the whole bill. I make them a pile of money and this was an exception. Great for the wallet but I didn't care for the restriction on my personality and my actions. It was all in my head but it felt like big brother was always watching.
Paranoid maybe!
