I'm changing out all the split rings on most of my baits so that I can shrink wrap them (topwater and bucktails). The only shrink tubing I can find won't fit the number 7 Bucher split rings most of my baits have, but will fit the #5s. I noticed that on the tail hook of the TopRaiders is what appears to be a #5 splitring. My question is what pound test are the number 5s and 7s? I'm afraid I might be cutting corners, but if Bucher thought it OK to put a #5 on the book hook of his famous TopRaider, why shouldn't I? Thoughts?

I beleive they are 250#(5`s) and at that small diameter they are superstrong. There is a way to shrink #7`s but it is a hassle!

If you cannot find shrink tubing big enough, no offense, but you are not looking hard enough. You can buy it up to 1/2" i.d.

Hi- Try an electrical supply store like Graybar. Shrink tubing can be found up to sizes where you could shrink tube the entire bait.

Good luck

i use the #5 wolverines; they're stronger at 350#'s, the same outside diameter, and are easier to work with. they now offer stainless steel rings too.

I looked at the shrink tubing I have and it's 1/4". I tried True Value and Menards. I'll try Ace, too for the 1/2". Thanks for all your replys!

Does "shrink tubing" your split rings actually increase the number of hook ups, or is it just another fad?

It depends on the bait first off, and it is really designed as a purpose to keep that back hook from swinging and tangling. On certain baits really does improve hook-ups, and some its just a fad!
