| Can anyone tell the advantage or disadvantage to having a dual frequency sonar as opposed to a single one. I am buying a X15 and it comes with a dual. Does it matter?

Location: Chicago, Beverly | It can matter especially if you fish a lot of deeper water(like 50-100 feet deep or deeper), I think the 50mhz setting is for the deeper water. Not sure on your unit but some dual freq units can run dual freq together somehow. I think for most situations we fish 200mhz is fine all the time, but if you take the time to figure out the 50mhz stuff you may find it works better in some situations. |

Bottom line, as I understand it, is that low freq will provide a wider cone angle resulting in a broader picture. Higer freq is a narrower cone angle resulting in a more pinpoint view. |

Location: Eau Claire, WI | As explained above the 50khz is more for deeper water, but it is my understanding that by deeper they mean Great Lakes, Ocean type deeper, 100 feet + type stuff. You will get better clarity ( a more defined picture ) buy using the straight 200khz transducer. I have an X15 and per recomendation from Luke Morris at Lowrance I purchased a single frequency 200khz and absolutely love it.

Location: Eau Claire, WI | Yes you can choose between them but what Luke told me is that you don't get maximum watt output even when you select just one so the clarity/detail is a bit compramised. You can call Lowrance and talk to their customer service or ask for Luke Morris...
My recommendation... buy the 200khz for the additional $60 and sell you dual frequency on one of the great lakes web sites. That's what I did and mine sold in like 2 weeks.. I think the swap out cost me about $15 most of it was shipping. |
