You can get a Modine type heater with a thermostat and rent a couple of propane tanks to run it pretty reasonable. That's the way that a few of my friends have gone. And, I think you'd be able to save some money in the long run using the propane instead of the kerosene. But, that's a guess.
Also, with the types you mentioned, you may want to check with your insurance carrier. I know they are very picky on wood burners in garages so I'd wonder about the portable types too.
I'd stay away from those hanging type electric garage heaters. They get to be pretty expensive to run.

| John,
How big is the garage? Can I assume you heat your home with Natural Gas or LP?
I'm looking at installing a Hot Dawg from Modine. Mounts on the ceiling, direct vents, has a fan, and works great. My bro had one at his last house. A bit more exspensive than the kerosene heaters, but no fumes, kerosene smell or mess, and is much more efficient. A 2-car garage can get by with a 45,000 BTU, and that model should run around $400. Installation is easier with the Yellow gas line, as it is flexible. Much cheaper and easier to install. If you can swing it, that is what you should do.
The biggest problem with the torpedo's is fumes, and moisture. With Kerosene, you always have that fuel mess, and smell. You can get torpedo's that run on LP, but need a larger tank, as the 40 lber's don't have the capacity to run them right.
Hope this helps. Merry X-mas! | |

| Convection type is gravity fed heat and unless it burns a long time its hard to sustain and even/useful heat. I have a 2 3/4 size garage and I use a torpeter at 11o,ooo btu and works great. I can put it on when my boat is frozen from late fall, under the trailer in 1 hr. the boat is thawed out and thaws out your vehicle fast too! I went with propane instead of kerosene a little more efficent and cleaner burning!
20# will run for 24 hrs. I also like to heat from the ground up as your heat rizes. It would be a different story if you are going to heat 24/7 - 365!
