Location: Wayzata, MN | OK Minnesota in Feb is a tough deal... and it gets tougher each year [for me].
So, here's the question: Where can a group [2 to 4 guys] go in February for a little musky fishing? We would be looking for boat rental, licenses and open water [to leagally fish, just thought I'd throw that in there;]
Any ideas? I've only musky fished in MN, WI and Ontario... I've never been south. I believe it's time [if fishing is open anywhere in Feb.]
Thanks in advance... | |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | If I were in YOUR shoes here's what I'd be looking at:
Locations
-Kentucky: Cave Run, Green River, or Buckhorn (or thorn, I can never remember)
-Lake Kinkaid in Southern Illinois
-Dale Hollow in Eastern Tennesee
-Pomme de Terre in Missouri
POSSIBLE Locations (if we have a really mild winter in the midwest)
-Lake Shelbyville in Central Illinois
-Iowa Lakes (?)
I dont have the time to get all the info on the lodging, or boat rentals, etc. But my number one suggestion is try to find a way to get together a GUIDED TRIP. Southern resevoir fishing is a whole different animal from northern natural lake muskie fishing. It will cost a bit more, but ups your chances immensley of tying into some fish.
OR if you can hold off a few more weeks, have your group attend the MuskieFIRST outting on Cave Run in the spring. That way, you'll be connected with a large number (30+) of muskie chasers who can help you get on the patterns quickly and can even find open spots in boats for you and your buddies.

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Last year's MuskieFIRST Cave Run Outting was March 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st. This year's should be just about the same time. This event is hosted by Crash Mullins and Tony Grant's guide services, so the muskie info flows and everyone is made known of what is getting the fish to go.

Location: Athens, Ohio | Further south, Fontana Lake near the N.Carolina / Tn. border has some huge muskies and no one fishes for them much. This lake is on the backside of the Smoky Mtn. Nat. Park, but getting there in winter weather may be a problem.
Dale Hollow is pretty much a trolling bite in the winter. You could join DougJ on nearby Lake Cumberland for stripers.
Let us know what you decide, you may get company if you want it. m

We're mulling over all of our options. So far, it sounds like me, a guy from work [his fishing partner, bro-in-law] and maybe a friend of mine from the Chicago area. All subject to change of course, depending on schedules, etc...
I will post the 'plan'... when [if?] we land on something... hey, more the merrier as far as I'm concerned...
Will it be warm enough for shorts? Man, shorts, fishing musky... in February [or?].......... wild...... Might scare the local wildlife with the incredibly white legs, but hey....

| I doubt you will find any open water in Iowa in Feb unless it's below a dam | |
