| Hey I just got a 400 calcutta for christmas it casts and reels smoothly but I get backlash on most of my casts ( I have only tried it in the yard so far). It says in the manual if your getting backlash at the beginning of your cast (which is what is happening to me) then it has something to do with your magnetic breaks the breaks on the inside of the reel and it says you should adjust them. What exactly do I do? I have tried adjusting the Cast controller too and that didn't make a difference.

| Esox, the only time I backlash mine is when I cast into the wind or put power pro on it. It's a smooth reel and you will like it. Check the brakes and make sure they are engaged. Good luck and get it slimey![;)] |

| I'm not sure you've done this but one thing that I would make sure is that my line is tight to the spool. If you don't have backing on your reel then you might get some slipping. I normally put 17 to 20 pound mono on before I put the super braid on. I also put on about 20 yards on before I start with the super braid.
Just a thought,

| Best way to avoid backlashing with Shimano garbage.....buy Garcia. Just my $.02....or in my case, my borrowed $.01.

| Any baitcasting reel can backlash, even a Garcia and it doesn't make any differnce how long you've been using one, you'll still occasionaly backlash.
With the Calcttas, there are six barrels on pins. The barrels slide to the inside of the pin, for less drag and to the outside for more cast control. You'll probally want to start with all the barrels to the outside of the pins. You can adjust 2 or 3 in as you get comfortable with the reel.
To find the correct setting for the spool tensioner, make several casts with your thumb riding the spool until you find the right setting, using less thumb pressure as you get closer. The best thing to do with any baitcast reel is to learn to lightly thumb the spool all the time. You'll get fewer backlashes and you'll be ready to stop the cast if you need to. Also, as with any baitcast reel, stop the spool with your thumb just as the lure lands so you don't get overrun.
If you're using braided line, Power Pro being the best in my opinion, 50lb or 65lb for muskie reels, be sure to put mono backing on first. This will stop the braided line from slipping on a hookset.
A larger diameter line will also have fewer backlashes and Power Pro is the easiest to untangle when it does backlash and it doesn't soak up water like a lot of dacron lines do. |

| Practice, Practice and then Practice some more.
A lot of folks have problems when first using new equipment but once you get acustomed to the feel and sounds you should do fine

| I just got a Calcutta 251 from Santa for "Piken". I spooled it up today with 17 lb mono. I moved all of the weights to the "on" position and went out to the back yard with a casting plug. Knock on wood, I didn't have any backlash trouble. It does seem to limit the casting distance a little bit. I also tried playing around with the cast control knob.
One thing that does puzzle me a bit is after you depress the thumb bar and let line out the level wind does not traverse back and forth. It stays in the position it was in when you depressed the thumb bar. When you turn the handle and the clutch engages, it starts winding from that spot as well. My abu's traverse when your letting line out/casting??? |

| Thanks guys, its not that I don't know how to cast a baitcaster I can do that quite well its just getting used to this calcutta I think. With my abu garcia I have to put much more effort and alot of thrust into my casting thats why I might be gettting overrides. I just don't really understand the Magnetic breaks that I might want to adjust.

| Chadster are the weights already on or do I have to turn them on manually? Your levelwind should definatly be moving back and forth when line comes out like in a cast. WHen I cast it goes back and forth. It moves back and forth when I reel also.

| I have six weights. Three of them were in the "on" position and three were not. I had to push them out to the "on" position.
Also, I have extra weights that were included with the reel. Some are green and some are red. Anyone know if there is a difference???
With the level wind; When I am winding/clutch engaged the level wind traverses. When I am letting line out/casting it does not??? I am wondering if I put it togather wrong after adjusting weights???

| Chad,
Something must of went wrong with the weights, but your levelwind should be going back and forth i don't know why it wouldn't. Thats wierd if you can't get it fixed maybe you got it like that and send it to Shimanos service center. |

| Talked to Shimano today. They said on the smaller reels (i.e 250/251)the level wind does not traverse. The 400 and 700 do. The must have done that because the spool is quite narrow on the 250 serries.
Also, they said the green plastic caps for the brake system are hevier than the red. They said a beginer should probably use the green (more braking). They also stated that when you adjust the caps to the "off" position it can be any combination of the six. In other words, you can have two right next to each other in the off position and the brake will function properly. They do not have to be opposite from one another. |

| The 400 is a little different i opened it up turned all of them on. They are grey but i got 4 extra weights that are grey and 4 that are white. What ones are the heavier breaking, the ones that came on the reel are grey. |
