Chuck- I know you fish some of the nortnern WI clear water lakes "Grinstone", etc. I'll be fishing a Canadian "trout lake" end of July. In the past, I've always fished it earlier- 1st week in June- New Canadian Muskie season opening dates have stopped that.

How do you approach trout water (gin clear) mid to end of July, i.e., tactics & lures choices? FYI: This lake does have all the classic structure including deep water (125-150') and contains Laker's & Cisco's.

Thanks in advance-

Hi Esox, Gin clear water can be a tough nut to crack at times but there are methods and presentations that can greatly improve your chances. First remember that the type of eco-system you decribed has more than likely giant fish potential and if your like me thats what I'm going to target, so I won't even get into methods for smaller fish or action. First if the weather conds. are good the baits should be on the large size, if poor conds. exsist than concider down-sizing your baits, you said the magic word! Cisco's, match that hatch. The times to fish will be determined by weather conds. also, during the middle of the day prime shallow feeding areas are ok as long if it's over-cast, if not then fishing for the suspended fish is the way I would go, if trolling is permitted I would spend most of the day with that presetation. On bait selections and colors, big crank and jerk-baits in white or silver and natural colors are my choices, bucktails with large fluted nickle blades for shallow areas and french or willow-leaf for deeper areas, the color of the tail keep basic, white, natural, red and black. My personal favorite time to fish these types of lakes are low or no light periods! (hint) Hope you nail a pig.
