I do a lot of night fishing (MN) and have for many years. Generally, as the mid-day bite begins to improve in mid to late fall, my night patterns die. I generally stop night fishing when the H2O temps fall into the low 50 degree range, but usually only because casting (I'm a caster) becomes more uncomfortable when the temps are in the 30's and the wind is blowing hard out of the North.
HOWEVER, for a couple of years now I've been following the Mille Lacs fishing reports posts on another board. The walleye guys look forward all year to trolling at night in very shallow water on the full moon in November. Those are 40 degree water temps we are talking about. Last year, there were times that the muskies seemed to be caught more often than walleyes. The walleye guys were even complain about it! Imagine that. There have already been some dandies caught on ML by the night trollers this fall. Generally, they're trolling small (for muskies) minnow baits on long lines over 4-8 ft. sand flats and rocks. This bite is encouraged by the shallow tullibee spawn that corresponds with the Nov. full moon water temp/time period.
Long story short: Yes, muskies can be caught in the late fall at night. The baitfish connection will play a big part in your success on the lake you are fishing. Presenting a bait in (sometimes) bitterly cold temps is also an issue. Usually limits you to trolling, depending on the weather. Occassionally, you'll get a nice, warm misty night in late Oct./early Nov. and those can be prime conditions. You'll have the lake to yourself; save a few die hard walleye guys.
