| Concerned with stealth in clearwater lakes, I have used Demon circle hooks with 100lb mono leader and 30lb backing on the reel. Eventhough I get alot of takers, my hook up percentage has been mediocre to say the least the past two seasons and I hate waiting game. I am thinking that the 7Islands quickstrike rig might be an alternative in clearwater. For stealth purposes, is anyone using longer mono or flouro leaders that are 4-6 ft long? Also, are you using a superline attached to the leader or are you using mono? Any concerns using superline in clearwater or am giving a musky too much credit? ; )
Thanks in advance for any help on this!!!

| Thanks for the reply Esox... How are your hook up percentages compared to a Maina rig or others since there is only one treble? I like idea of not having to break a rubber band.
thanks

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I went with Tyger leader material for my Howie Rigs....better name in my opinion. Easy to tie, but will LOOK bad (the coating comes off), but its great for tearing out of a sucker.

| Thanks Todd. I rigged up a couple with 100lb mono and put a tiny split ring and a tiny panfish hook just to make it easier for rigging vs. putting the leader through the suckers mouth. It slides freely up and down the leader so it shouldn't take away any power on the hookset. We'll see how it goes today on Oconomowoc. Correction, it is called the "Howie Rig". ; )
thanks guys!!

| Tried out the Howie Rig today and had a one take a sucker. I geared up and hammered it home only to see and feel a shredded leader. That was a 100lb mono. Any advantages to the Flouro? Is it tougher? Needless to say I was pretty bummed. I may have to use Slamr's idea making it out of tyger leader.
thanks

| Flouro and sucker rigs don't mix.Hearing waaaaay to many horror stories of being cut off.May not happen this year or next, but it WILL eventually.Risk too great.I love Howie's rig, just needs wire.ToothPROOF wire.A buddy lost a BIG fish this weekend the flouro rig was cut.And the beast swam away with the rig in it's face.I think the Europeans may be onto something.Thin WIRE,smaller, ultra sharp hooks and lighter tackle to compensate for the smaller rig.Haven't tried it myself yet.Still using wire.Anybody want to buy a brand new spool of 100lb Climax Flouro? No Mas. Location: Racine, Wi | Steve it right, I was there when the big girl ate that rig. I have seen floro break 3 times in the past month, and am going to wire. It is bad enough to loose a big fish, but to know that she is still pinned up, is even worse. Go with the wire, and I don't forsee any problems. That being said, we got a 38 on Oconomowoc on a sucker, and I won't tell ya what kind of rig it was. The last one of the batch, and it actually held up. No more floro on the sucker rigs for me.

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Had a very bad experience with flouro rigs last year. Never again!! The Howie rig is a great rig though, and I have also followed Slamr's lead and gone to Tyger leaders, 120# if you are interested.
Now if I could get the fish to start eating suckers! |

| Norm, what color tyger leader to you use. I have the grey but that really seems to stand out. I see they now have black. |

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I have been using the gray so far this year. I would think the black would blend a bit better. If you have the gray you may want to try color it with a marker.
The biggest advantages of the "Howie Rig" is the transfer of power on your hookset directly to the hook, and how lively and natural the suckers stay. |

| I'm with you guys...I'm going all wire either Tyger or thin Seven strand. The tyger seems to be a little thicker and is grey, so I'm thinking the thinner wire is less visible and is a dark copper which blends in with the suckers color pattern better.
Thanks for all the replys!!! Great board.

| Spent alot of money last year on howie rigs only to have 2 out of 3 bite off. That was the end of that, never again. They were easy to rig just sliding it through the gills.Went back to the herbie rig. Had some made out of titanium wire thinking that they won't kink up and might last longer than 7 strand..Jury still out.
