After reading last weeks results from the pmtt I was wondering ,was the pattern a trolling bite ? Also were most of the anglers fishing the eastern new york portion of the lake ? being from ky if I could make a trip up there this fall the western portion of the lake is closer to me. Thanks ManitouDan

Howdy, Dan. Just guessing from the photo here: http://tuffshad.tripod.com , it looks like Team TuffShad had their boat rigged to troll. Chris makes some great trolling baits, but I have not heard what baits caught all those fish. Promusky.com has not updated their results page with the story the last I checked. I'm hoping for more information, too, let us know what you hear. m

People were catching fish trolling and casting. 1st place went to the trollers and 2-5 went to the casters. Trollers were short-lining Tuff Shads and the casters were using suicks, leo's and other jerkbaits in the weeds.

We got one Friday on a Tuffshad (that's now destroyed) and a rip on a Wiley (fat one), and in the tournament we got one on that Wiley.

I heard the winners were out trolling in the middle of the lake. My guess is they were working balls of baitfish, suspended out in the middle of nowhere, and just stayed on them.

Shep, the whole lake is a ball of suspended baitfish, no kidding. I've NEVER seen so much bait. If you went more then 50 yds w/o seeing pods of bait you would scratch your head and wonder what's going on. It's that crazy. Looking for bait wasn't much of a pattern.

They were fishing the saddle between 2 deep basins in the lake from what it looked like on the map.

Treats,

Thanks for some more insight. I didn't know, it's just that is all I heard. Still, for the number of fish caught, and from what I heard, seen, during both prefish, and the tourney, this sounds like an awesome fishery. Congrats to all the made the Championship, and got to experience it.

It's an excellent fishery, first 2 days we thought it was a sewer, could not move a fish casting, or get a rip trolling. We just did not give her enough time, 35 fish for 50 boats day one, I would believe the total should be 50 for 50, pretty incredible for a tourney. You can cast and troll to put fish in the boat, casting seemed more consistant. Treat's can catch fish trolling, now he must pay his debt to the trolling gods, some guys are going to get lucky(squeell like a pig). Never have seen me graph lose bottom so much because she could not get through the bait fish.

Good fishing

The casting bite was tough, you has too almost amke contact with the weeds to get the fish to move on the bait.

Wind made the boat control hard in my zones and my partner chose to abort the zone for cleaner water and less wind.

The 2nd -- 5th place casters were all in the south eastern part of the lake if I am correct. I know most of them were because I could see them from the spot I liked.

Prefishing we caught a 42 1/2 and a 46 1/6 trolling and a 37 and 38 casting. We thought it was going to be easy to score multiple fish during tournament hours.

We were humbled after hearing that 6 fish were caught the first day by one team and they lost 4 others trolling Tuff Shads in open water on the North West end of the lake. They trolled 5.5 mph over very deep water between two deep holes fishing 8 to 15ft deep from what I heard. I did see them on Sunday doing that same pattern and they scored 1 more fish to seal the deal for them.

Very clean water on the North West end and dirty shallow water on the South East end. Any one interested in more info just e-mail me.

Those of us local boys are all very glad you liked our Lake Chautauqua, NY. Very Sorry about the weather conditions ripping across the Great Lakes thru our little pond, but as you know, just about any kind of weather can move in during mid-October... Most of the time our lake has a nice steady breeze which is just right for trolling or drifting down that weedline. Anyway, come on back anytime! Yours truly, DRMUSKIE

What an awesome lake! I hope the PMTT decides to go back soon. We too had a blast prefishing catching a 34", 41",42", and 46" casting J-mac jigs and slow rolling spinnerbaits through the weeds on the weedlines. Was looking very forward to Saturday and felt very confident but was shut down... In a big way. 6 fish day one. Ouch! Sunday we decided to troll the northern basin for suspended fish and lost a 38"-40" fish as it threw a believer on the way into the net. We also had several other hits but no hook ups. I've never seen a lake with so many patterns producing fish equally.

The productive "multiple patterns" you experienced is typical of our lake between the north and south basins (almost like two different lakes), but is also due to the big changes going on typically in October. This is a weedbed "casters" lake in June and early July, then turns into a typical "troller's" lake in mid-July and August. After Labor Day, the big boys move into the shallows again and the heavy boat traffic leaves, turning to a mixed choice of casting or trolling. OCTOBER is always a mystery...trying to figure out where the fish are...still shallow in a fall feeding frenzy, suspended out over deep water as temps move into the 50s, fully fed for winter and laying in the deep "holes", or scattered everywhere. Last weekend they were scattered everywhere --- as I watched you guys from afar (as I closed down my cottage there for winter).
