I am generally limited to fishing during the evenings after work- this works great in the summer when the water is warmer and the fish are more active. Went out last night and tried a mix of jerkbaits and slower moving topwaters like the Loca-Motive and a creeper but didn't see anything. Does anyone have any tips for night fishing in cold water periods?

Thanks,
Shane

Well if you have been fishing monona lately NOTHING has been working...it has been the dead SEA!!!!!

BUT, I have had sucess in the fall throwing cranks in the evening. We had luck in Canada on shallow rocks throwing cranks LATE at night. Not a lot of structure like that around madison but the steep breaks/weedlines are great places to throw cranks. And don't think the fish don't feed after dark either.

Good luck!

Cory is right....try throwing crankbaits over still green weedbeds and off of rocky shorelines/island/humps. I have done very well, when I could handle the cold, fishing some of the neighboring lakes to Eagle late in the fall. It is illegal to fish after dark on Eagle, so we end up pulling the boat and running to Indian Chain, Corner, Canyon, etc., after dark.

I leave a week from tomorrow for my last fall foray....hopefully the hawgs are eating, eh?

Try DDDs, Depth Raiders, Jointed Baby Depth Raiders, and Believers over remaining weeds or other structure. Bucktails and topwaters will still work under certain conditions, usually warming periods. Magnum Bulldawgs and Bulldawgs are another option.

I will be nightfishing some this weekend in IN. I night fish during September and early October, but not when it gets really cold in later October and November.

once the water temps drop below 50* or so, 10" Jakes trolled slowly along the shallow breaklines. Try to catch weedtops now and then, rip from the weeds and get ready for the strike. Fish SLOWLY. Last fall, the best fishing always came after dark. Made it so I was breaking skim ice back to the landing.

Also, with Abus in cold weather, thumbbar casting systems ALWAYS freeze up before the old fashioned push button models.
