| Anyone have any experience with high lb. test mono leaders? If memory serves me right, Gregg Thomas fishes with a heavy mono leader. What knot would I try to connect the mono to my main line? Any brands of line I might try? Thanks for your help! |

Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | I make 150# test heavy mono leaders. I've caught half my muskys on them, and boatloads of pike, and have never had a failure. I sell them on my site, if you are interested.

Location: Land O' Lakes WI | PowerPro has a new line designed for just what you are talking about. I think it is available in 80# and 100# if I am not mistaken. It is a hollow core super braid. You insert about 3 feet the high test mono into the hollow core line and then finish it with floss on the leading edge of the overlap. It works like a Chinese finger trap. Check their web site, it is in their catalog for sure. This is being used extensively in salt water to eliminate the bulk of a knot at the splice point.
Hope this helps,

Location: Hazard KY | I use mono leaders in the 80 to 100lb range while trolling and casting. I really like it on bucktails and crank baits, I use about a 12" leader with ball bearing swivel and a cross lock snaps like gotcha brand sold by muskie bay. I tie them with a blood knot. Flourocarbon works well but the knots are harder to tie. The brand that I like is Sufix they make a lot of bill fish and salt water leaders.

| Mark,
My friends who fish for bluefin tuna use the finger puzzle connection to their running line but use a crimp at the hook end. They then wrap the crimp with something to keep it from opening. I'm not sure what the wrap is, but I could find out. They use dental floss between the eye and barb of the hook to keep the bait on the hook. Bait is usually a 5-10 pound fish.

| I use 100 pound mono for trolling clear water systems. Never had any problems but longer length 36" plus helps avoid damage to the fish.
