I have a '96 200 EFI. When I try to start it the starter spins but doesn't engage. What should I do?

Thanks,

Jesse

try spraying some lube on the starter shaft above the gear that engages the flywheel. If this get dry the gear may not jump up and engage. If this does not work you may need a new solenoid.

Take the motor in to a good Mercury Mechanic.

Be sure your battery is fully charged and your battery connections are clean with no corrision.

Sounds to me like it's the starter drive gear, some people refer to this as the Bendix. Either take the boat to a mechanic as Steve suggested or take the starter off and take it to a service center to be checked.
