Location: Hartland, WI | I have a depth raider that had most of its original paint ripped off of it from fish. I never really liked the pattern, so I decided to shave off the remainder of what was left. Now I have a clear plastic bodied depth raider.
Where can I go to get the "right" type of paint???
What is the process???
I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks guys. |

| There are a variety of ways you can re-finish the lure. Most serious lure-builders use an airbrush to do their painting but some very nice finish work can also be done with a rattle can if that is all you have available to you. I would suggest using a white primer on the bait first. You can then follow this up with any combination of colors that interest you, look for ideas at any of the big tackle shops. Be patient and make sure you allow each coat of paint time to dry completely before going to the next step. Some easy patterns to begin with are black/white, red/white, etc., and most will catch fish as well as any other. You can build stencils from playing cards or a section of plastic like that found on a milk-jug if you are interested in adding gills, bars, etc. Scales can be added by painting over a veil material that can be purchased at stores offering clothing materials and crafts....WalMart generally has some too. You can order 3-D eyes from Stamina, Janns, etc., or paint them yourself by using a flat nail dipped in paint then transferred to the bait.
Once the paint has completely dried..usually 24 hours you are ready to finish. Devcon Two Ton epoxy would probably be the best finish for you if you are only doing a single bait. You can buy "Two Ton" epoxy at Wal-Mart. It comes in two parts, mix thoroughly in a small Dixie Cup....make sure you mix it well. Now paint it on to the paint fairly heavily. Once you have the entire bait covered you will need to turn it slowly by hand for about 15 minutes, this prevents the epoxy from sagging. After that set the bait aside and allow it to dry for about 6 hours at which time you can apply a second coat.
Hope this helped you some and feel free to email me if you have further questions.

| Yep, unless you plan on starting to do your own painting on more than a casual basis your money is better spent by letting the expert do it. MRG is the man when it comes to super high quality paint jobs. Stan Durst is no slouch either. |

| Stan Durst has done some great work for me, and I just had him custom paint 6 DDDs that turned out awesome. Thanks to Matt at ERC for the blanks, and I am adding my own Bucher split rings and VMC hooks.

Most of the paint is ripped off from FISH ?? You never LIKED the color?? Seems like it should be your newest favorite color. And if they keep hitting it with lots of paint gone why mess with it?
If you just want to paint it up yourself get out the old model car paints, you know those tiny bottles of enamel and paint her up. I modify the colors on a lot of lures with this stuff and don't even bother clearcoating over it. It is pretty tough and will stick to anything and is easy and cheap to re-apply. I have done some fancy painting on home made lures but I'm not sure if the fish care if the paint job is fancy or not. |

Location: Hartland, WI | THanks guys, for all the tips. I contacted MRG yesterday, Mike is a great guy. I will be sending some baits his way. I do a lot of night fishing with depth raiders, and have realized that any of them work. I think it is more the motion, or action of the lure that creates strikes and not the color. But you do like to have some nice looking baits, right??? So I thought getting a couple touched up and in some interesting patterns may be fun.
Good point though Lobi, I was thinking the same thing when I was writting the thread, I was just waiting for someone to say that. |
