Location: Athens, Ohio | Wow, what a trip to Northern Wisconsin with Mauser. My right index finger took a hook so I won't write much (work calls, too!) but I need to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the wonderful family at MuskieFirst for a great fishing trip. The hospitality and generosity was, frankly, overwhelming, made it kinda hard to go home!
We stayed with Tomcat Thirsday night and got to meet his wife and kid. Great bunch of people and he loaned us a couple Phantoms, one of which raised a good fish on Kentuck. Got to see the new and improved Steve and some of the most awesome fish photos one can imagine. So good to see Stevie again and finally meet Tom. Then, on to Pewaukee with EsoxLazer and Tuffy1. We moved a couple fish and found that muskie lures really don't bankshot off of flagpoles very well! Thanks to Eric's folks for putting us up - and putting up with us.
On to Rhinelander. We noticed so many Harleys on the way up and finally found out there was a big biker rally in Tomahawk. Steered clear of that, two old married guys could get into real trouble there!. We borrowed the Patriot for the afternoon and moved a couple with no hookups. Accomodations at the Hideout were wonderful. Sunday, Keith took us out to three different lakes and worked our butts off to get fish. I think we saw 12 that day, including one that vaulted over my surface bait the first cast I made with it. Mauser got a dink and I had several good shots at fish who seemed to enjoy looking but not eating. Dang cold front anyway. A delicious dinner of fried potatoes and 'muskie steaks' (Steve, how does Sue get those big fillets so tender?) awaited our arrival. Ok OK, it was salmon with cheese melted and was the best meal I'd had in ages.
Gotta go now, more later about Sunday with Tony Grant. m

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Sorry I missed you two, I was looking forward to seeing you and hitting the water a bit. Keith truly had a great time with you on the water. He said the muskies were not real cooperative, but they showed themselves, at least. Glad Sue made you the magic salmon, that stuff is GOOD.

Location: Athens, Ohio | Steve, it was one of the pleasures of my life to get to fish with Keith, just sorry we missed seeing you. You have a fine son who is a dang good fisherman, you should be very proud. Thanks again for your hospitality. I'll be singing the praises of Violent Strike Lures for quite a while.
We fished with Tony on Sunday, hitting two of his favorite lakes. Mauser moved a fish on the Phantom at the first lake but the usual hot spots were cold so we moved. Really neat to have so many good musky waters to choose from in such a short distance from each other! I had a fish coming in on a surface bait, right next to the boat he bolted and all I saw was a lot of belly flash. Goood fish, too. Tony boated a 40, came up on a surface bait about 10 feet from the boat and went sky high with the bait in it's mouth. I got the net quickly and we had her. Made me a bit apprehensive about peeing over the side after seeing that jump. Tony worked real hard to put us on fish but it was not happening that day. He was pretty banged up from water conditions at Vermillion but he stuck with us. Tony, thanks! We had a great time.
Made it home last night and surveyed the flood damage Hurricane Ivan left in Athens County. My road was closed all day Friday, my wife couldn't get to work and school was called off. Hey, I left her two boats, what was the problem? I'm glad I missed all that. As frustrating as it was to see all those fish and not catch one, I just thought about all the nekkid biker chicks I could have seen instead and decided that would have been even more frustrating, so it was a good trip. thanks again, everyone for a very memorable weekend. m

It was great meeting you, Mauser, and Eric. I had a great time, and so did Palo. (thanks for being so good with him)
I wish you would have stuck that fish. He was trying to get caught. That's musky fishing I guess.
It was great to see how well Eric listens to directions when we tell him where to cast. LOL
I don't think I have ever seen someone hook a flagpole so well.
Too bad you won't be able to make it for the Kly Klassic. Looking forward to fishing with you guys again sometime. Let me know if you are in the area, and I would be glad to have you in the boat with me again.
Take it easy!! | |

Location: oswego, il | Mikie, glad to see you and mauser had a good time up north. Don't psend too much time up there, it might affect your accents. You might end up saying somthing like, "ya hey der, y'all".
So Steve was not there, but had you stay at the hideout, had his son more or less guide you guys and had his wife cook you a fabulous meal? We are truely blessed to have this guy around.

You need to get up here and experience the Hideout. I am truly blessed with a GREAT wife and family. Just the way they are, they wouldn't have had things any other way. mikie and Mauser will get back up here, I hope, because I DO owe them a day on the water. If the Hideout sells ( Have it listed now) we will move the entire operation to Minocqua. Plenty of room there at the house Sue had built!
The Salmon is pretty good, in fact, REALLY good. I always worry I'll run out during the winter.

Location: Southern W.Va. | Thanks for everything , Steve, moved a fish or 2 and had a great time, can wait to get back up that way. Was thinking of maybe a mid July trip next summer if I can talk Mikie into it. Can't thank Keith enough, he showed us the fish and I even had a good strike but failed to hook up, Mikie had a good fish bust a Eagle Surface Spinner and come out of the water about 10" from the boat but failed to hook up for him. Sure hope to see the 2 of you at the Cave this spring , till them , keep your lines tight and your hooks sharp, and thanks again.
Mauser
P.S. Tell Sue that was the best fish I think I ever ate, so give her a big hug for me and tell her I said thank you for having us to your neck of the woods. By the way, have Keith tell you where we saw that buck, it was a pretty good deer.
