Location: Winnipeg Manitoba | Spent the day on Friday fishing the north-east section of LOTW, the water kind of looked like pea soup. no muskies but we did catch some large pike. Whats the best way of fishing during a bloom? |

Most of the time it gathers on the upper sections of the water column leaving the lower "zones" clearer then one might think. I've heard that downsizing might help, but I would stick with your most confident patterns and baits. Also, try and search out areas in the lake that have clearer water. If the wind is constant, try the none windy shorelines. Also, deeper water with more current seems to have less bloom because its washed out with the running water. Try neckdown or narrows areas. GregM and I fished a few areas last year on the sab bay trip that were absolutely covered with a green ooze. Probably the worst bloom I've ever seen....but we just kept on chuckin and stuck a number of fish.

| I'm no expert on the subject but in a new video I bought called "The Muskie Masters", Doug Johnson and Dick Pearson emphasize larger profile baits during a bloom or dirty water period. ( I realize the bloom is usually restricted to the surface but it reduces light penetration) They are experts on Lake of the Woods and throw alot of 10" Jakes and larger Suicks. |

| .Depends totally on the weather. Hot and calm usually starts it in warm water. LOTW is so diverse you can usually find clearer water somewhere. If any wind go upwind to find clearer water. Remember that it is on the surface. Spinnerbaits with big Colorados has worked in the past even in the bloom. |

Location: Winnipeg Manitoba | Thanks for the tips on dealing with this. not having any experiance in dealing with this type of situation, we stuck with larger baits such as Jakes and Grandmas. I tried going deep underneath it with a hooker. We also tried to stick with bright colours like fire-tiger. Like I said, no muskies but I did catch a 41 inch pike on the hooker. It was a nice fish but not what I was after. |

Location: Northern IL | When I get to a lake the 1st thing I look for is the color of the water,, and the darker the better! The better the bloom the shallower the fish will move when they become active. However if the bloom is so thick that it dose not allow you to present your baits then it's time to move to where you can. I'll take the good water color every time! |
