Location: New Baden IL | Does anybody use wire line for trolling? I have been thinking about giving it a try this fall, just to show the fish something a little different. Not necessarily deeper, but with a different sound/dive angle.
Where do you get your stuff, and what do you use? Some pictures of your rigs would be awesome, just to see.
How do you attatch leaders, baits, etc.
Do you have to use a bugle or twili tip?
Thanks in advance,

Location: Holly, MI | I have not used Wire for Muskie Yet. I have planned to give it a try and even had the wire rod in the boat but just havn't ran it.
I do run wire trolling for King Salmon however and it can be very effective. It does a lot of things. It will run deeper than other lines because it is very small diameter. Some guys claim that the sound it makes in the water can be a big trigger factor. When trolling a Dipsy Diver with 200 ft of line out there is a major bow in the line if you are using mono. Not so with the wire because of diameter and extremly little strech. Speaking of strech, wow is it fun to battle a King on a wire rod. You can feel every heartbeat. Remember the first Ski you hooked up with on power-pro, how much you loved the fight with a near zero strech line.
I'm using Mason 7 strand wire. You do have to be very careful not to get any kinks in the line. It will part quickly under the pressure of a fish with any kink. I removed my tip top on one rod and installed the "Twili Tip", seems to work great. The tip came with many adapters to fit it to any rod. For crimps match the crimp size to the lb test of wire you are using by diameter. I have just crimped on a good swivle and ran leaders off that.
Please bring this post back to life if you give it a shot and let us know how it worked for you. |

| Ive used wire for trolling for the last 5 yrs and fish with guys who still have the same wire spooled on their reels after 15yrs..I wont troll with anything else...The best type to get is Single Strand Monel, and it can be purchased from Rollie/Helens, Thornes, etc...Cortland makes really good stuff..About $15 for 300 yards..I use a twilli tip...To tie to your leaders, baits, etc just form a loop and do a haywire twist around the standing line...Very simple |

Location: New Baden IL | MuskyMike,
thanks for the tips, but I was really wondering what kind of Rods you use???
How much line do you put on a reel? What kind of backing works best?

| Rodney,
Wire line is a great tool for increasing the depth of our baits and thats the "ONLY" reason to use wire!! We don't use wire because we think it gives off some kind odd or different sound,,, please,,, A fish is not smart, he is TOTALLY controlled by his environment,, Don't over think this stuff.
Ive been using wire for many years and have caught hundreds on it. (50"ers as deep as 46') Wire is a must have! 20lbs single strand works well on a short solid fiberglass rod.
Put wire in your tool bag but do it for the right reason "depth control". Hire me and Ill show you everything you need to know about fishing in deep water. I have a buddy that caught 93 muskies in the month of July, all on wire in deep water including 3 50" or better. |

Location: New Baden IL | I just got my first spool of wire...
Any help on what's the best way to attatch it to my reel?
I know it seems pretty simplistic, but I've never messed with the stuff before.
Should you use a backing or attatch it direct?
Help a fella out.....please

| I use an albright knot to attach the wire to backing. With musky, you will never get into the backing so it will not matter what you use. Lower test mono makes good backing because it will pack onto the spool tightly. For rods I use saltwater rigs with all roller guides. You could get by w/ a regular setup but I would recommend at least a good roller tip. Be careful to avoid kinks in the line. Get crimp connectors in the proper lb test and a good crimping pliers to apply them and you will have no problems attaching terminal tackle to the wire. |
