Just talked with Grant. The guys are on some good fish. Jonesi has a 51! and a 48! WTG, Stever!! Matt had a good fish on, and lost it at the boat. Maybe a 53? DaveJ has a few fish, with at least one in the upper 40's. Gene is looking to get a prop/lower unit fixed, as he hit a rock yesterday. Bummer. Hope he gets it taken care of today and gets back at it. Sounds like the guys are out all day long, and having a great time.

I was planning on going up on Wednesday evening, but now cannot due to my mother needing surgery on Thursday or Friday.

Thanks, John.

I'm going to call the Jackley cell tonight, and hope he answers it. If not, I will call Grant back, and see if Jonesi is coherrant enough to talk. Man, I wish I was up there!

Talked with DaveJ over the MF Hotline tonight. He said Sab Bay is on fire. He has 16 fish in his boat so far, but only got one today. Had been overcast, but today was sunny. Jonesi's fish was a 51.5, a personal best. He also has a 48 and a 45, plus more. Matt has a 48, and a couple other good fish. All MFer's have gotten fish, and Dave said they are probably over 70 as a group! They had the Pig Roast last night. It was great again, and Dave said they didn't save any for me! hehehe

Told Dave I would call again Friday, and sent best wishes from all you Mfer's to everyone up there.

Geez, thanks Shep. Bad enough I'm not along in the first place. Then to top it off, my boat partner appears to have the hot boat for the trip (in numbers).

Dave - Keep them all stuck this year. You find that one from the narrows, I want my hook back.

How are Cornbread & Mauser doing?

Well Al, I know Mikie has a 40-incher so far.................He caught it with me the day before he left for Sab Bay. Gene, Mauser and Mikie came to Pewaukee for a few beers and some muskie action on Thursday the night before they left for Canada.

I bet that just got their blood going and made it all the longer ride up the next day.

Mikie is a muskie magnet in my boat......................

Hi Guys,
Mauser report: he started hot with 2 fish on Saturday after being on the water only 2 hours. Also had 2 muskies and a big pike within 10 casts while fishing with Jonesi and The Dude, followed by a strike by a BIG girl while throwing another rod/reel combo while Matt was replacing his hooks! Mauser was so happy this week he was delirious.

Mikie report: he had his best week ever, with _10_ _muskies_ caught and released (in addition to the 40 he got on the way up in Pewaukee). I think more than a couple over 40 inches, don't have details because Mikie didn't squeeze me into his dance card. Passed on the opportunity to fish with his buddy Papa Joe.

They were heading to Gene's place in Wisconsin tonight and heading back to Ohio/WV tomorrow.

Fun week, I had a nice fat 44 and 4 other muskies. Will post some pics of Mauser and me tomorrow.

Nap time,
papa joe

What an incredible trip! The numbers are just numbers,it's the circumstances and the people that truly make it memorable.Great to see old friends and make some new ones too.I did get my 1st 50, at 51 1/2.Will call Fittante this week.Matt and I arrived a little later on Sat. so we only fished for an hour or so.We worked on the Mojo for Sunday.I've fished the East end(Nestor Falls) for a few years(15) so we decided to make the run and see.The water east was clearer and practically no bloom.1ST spot we hit,I get an upper 40's on a 700 series Buchertail to the boat and as she's about done, the bait and 10lbs of weeds go one way, the fish goes another.Ugggg.After losing 2 50" class fish in Minnesota in 2 days, that one stung.More determined than ever, we hit spot #2 where Matt sticks a 38 on the 8.Sweet!Make 1 pass on spot # 3 and I hit a 39 1/2 on a topwater.BUT, in this same spot, I saw the biggest fish I'd ever seen. She rose up in about 3' of water and looked as though she was going to eat the bucktail, but when she opened her mouth, the blade stopped and she sank out of sight.I was distraught!!!I had to sit down and must have smoked 9 cigs in 10 minutes.NEVER had a fish shake me like that.No idea what a fish that size was doing on a "weed" spot.Yellow Mutant Fish.We continued our run and contacted fish on every spot.I knew then,we'd be burning some gas that week.We hit spot # 1 on Mon .am and have a good fish follow that same bucktail but won't turn on the 8.We fish the spot through, turn around and do it again.1st cast with Old Perchy(topwater) and the water explodes.Fish comes completely out of water but is stuck good. After she's in the net, the debate starts."Oh my God, she's 50".No way man.2 measurements later and she's 51 1/2"!!!Time to break out the Crown! This is where it gets nutty. After a few sippies,I get on the TM as the Dude makes some casts.I'm still in shock. Not 5 casts later, about 20 yards down the line, and an absolute MONSTER attempts to eat the Dude's W (er topwater).Bigger than the one we released 10 minutes earlier.Unreal.The Mojo continued all week.We had 23 fish in the boat for the week, with the top 5 being 45,48,48,49 and the 51 1/2.4 of these were on topwater.Incredible.Aside from the fish caught, it's the ones we saw, had follow and or lost that will keep me going this winter.Having not been to my happy place in 4 years,in my humble opinion, LOTW is the BEST lake in the world.Muskies everywhere, and big fish too.If the criterion are size and numbers, the Woods is #1 hands down.Oh yeah, Nestor Falls is waaaay pressured and there are no fish there!HaHaHaHaHa.Don't listen to all you hear, Just Fish. And talk about Mojo. We're running to a spot and I see a pop can floating.I do a u turn and retreive the can from the lake.Pull up to the spot a short distance away, and on my 1st cast, I get a 48" eating Lure X(thanks Gregg) at boatside.Awesome! The Muskie Gods smiled upon us all week, and I'm sure The Short Kid had something to do with it all.Great time hanging with the boys at camp and spending some time in the boat with the Twins, Mikie and Mauser.Oh, and Eric, you were cristened right my friend!!Joe, it was great to finally meet you.We WILL share a boat at Cass.I got your earlier e-mail last night and felt bad we didn't get some water time. There are a few piggies we'll chase in 'Sota.Matt took 211 digital photos from the trip, and he'll post some when he gets home.Great trip, when we going back? Hey Steve,
Surely your not affriad of LOW being over pressured are you? "Lure X"......Just triyng to get a clue on Sab bay. C'mon give us a little more. Perhaps even somewhat vague....top water, crank, jerk, buck.... How about water temps and weather patterns while you were there (apparently stable judging by your activity eh?) . Just trying to help out a friend. I'll actually be in Minocqua next week (Sep 12-15)and am trying to figure whats going on up there for myself.

If he tells you what lure he will be attacked for "self promotion".

But I'll tell you it's a top water just like all the others.

OK, I'll spew.We found clearer water east, but the bloom wasn't bad at all near the Blueberries. The 1st couple days were cool and cloudy with intermittent rain on Sunday.Water temps early in the week were 62-64.Mornings were very chilly.Later in the week we had some warm sun which brought temps to the upper 60's and I think Dave Jackley found some low 70's on Friday afternoon. We caught fish under low light as well as bright sun.We found fish in all the classic areas.Weed saddles, rock bars, humps, points. One thing about the Woods. There are spawning areas that will hold fish all year. No reason to leave and venture to open water or main lake areas.Food , shelter and NO pressure.Big fish in 2-3' of water. We worked the edges, keeping the boat in 6-9' of water depending on the area. the weedlines typically were 5-7'.after working the edge, we would venture further , probing pockets ala The Goon.Main lake rocks showed us fish of all sizes, typically chunkier than their jungle counterparts.Another factor when fishing east is current. Look at the weeds and see what direction they lean. Caused by wind or flowage.Baits.My best bucktail was a 700 series buchertail , flame blade, brown tail. Gotta give my brother props on that one. He slayed them the last time we were there together on that bait. I tipped mine w/ a 4" Mister Twister(white). The Weagle produced the 51 1/2 , 49, 48 and a couple 38-40's. Mauser caught a 41-42, a 25 and a 36" pike in 10 casts on the Stink Pickle.(Cady color-Black Scale/Chartruese)Also threw the Ace Tandem Spinnerbait given to me by Phil Blanck at the Cass Tourney.Caught some , including a 45 on a back/flame LOW Rider. The fish and I also liked the Giant Kry Ba Be from American Hardwood Lures.Black/Chart. Lace.We searched with topwater globes/tailbaits/bucktails and went back with the Weagle if need be.Our reasoning was if they weren't active enough to eat the first offering, we'd slow down and really get under their skin so to speak. It worked and we got lucky.Oh, and bait x.I promised a friend from Kentucky not to reveal it .It's a bait that we've all seen in ads in the muskie mags but shluff it off as a who knows what.Had a 48 follow it to boatside and suck it in with less than a foot of line out.Awesome!Colorful ad too.Sent them an e-mail and hope to hear back. Got some awesome pics. The pics will be up tomorrow.feel free to e-mail me or pm me with any specifics. Steve

Steve,
On behalf of my friend Mike, Thankyou for the detailed info. I'm sure he's wating with baited breath to hear what its been like on LOW. Now if I could only find such detailed AND encouraging info for the Minocqua chain and Tomahawk before sunday I'd be ecstatic. Going there to fish a fund raiser for the local D.A.R.E. program.
Thanks again,
Karl Scherer
