As most of you know I purchased a 2004 Crestliner 1850 DC Fish Hawk. They are giving me two rod holders of my choice. What type of rod holders should I get and where should I put them on the boat. I am new to trolling but decided that it is something I should start doing. So Two rod holders where do they go. If you need to look at what a 1850 Fish Hawk looks like go to www.crestliner.com. I also have a 140 HP Johnson 4 Stroke and no kicker. I have to let them know in a couple of days. I pick up my boat on Friday would like to have them on by then (had to take it in for the 20 hour engine check up).

Thanks for all the help

No matter the maker (I prefere RAM) have them flush mount the holder bases. I'd have them mounted tword the rear, besure they're accessible quickly and wont be in the way of anything in the boat or on the gunwhale.

I would'nt mount them right on the tronsom, but at the end of the rear deck would'nt be a bad position....Crestliner's have a nice fat rear casting platform, you dont want to have to reach over it to get at a rod.

If you plan on only one per side then I would reccomend putting then back one foot from the marks above. If you think you may ad 2 more later then the front one should be on those marks and the second ones 2 feet back. Putting them to far up will limit your ability to turn sharply.

Downeasters are the best rod holders out there.

Definatly get the down easters!!! If they are paying for them be sure to get the powder coated ones instead of the raw finished ones. They will last longer and work smoothly (say..open easier) much longer too. If you intend to be trolling with them they are needed for strength that plastic ones just can't come close to. Can you imagine a rod holder breaking off on a big strong hit and taking your Rod, reel and new favorite lure to the bottom? If they are mounted right you can run them as down rods, out rods or swing them up to hold rods for planer boards or long flat rods. You might want to add one on each side of the motor on the back if you are going to be running prop wash lures when trolling.

We run lures in the propwash with the rod tip in the water. The lure can be unweighted or add up to 16 oz of lead. The lure is usually only 5 to 10 ft behind the prop of the boat. If we have only two people onboard we will probably run two planer board rods and two down rods or one down and one wash. The down rods are mounted in front of the windshield and the rods go straight down into the water with 2 feet or so of the rod tip in the water. The lure is NOT even behind the boat. In fact if it is lightly weighted you can see it swimming beside the boat. We usually run 8 to 16 oz but up to 24 oz on these lines. One afternoon my partner and I landed 7 of 10 muskies that hit. 8 of the 10 hits came on the down rods. On that day the wash rods were not even used because we were in Canadian water where they only allow one rod per angler.

We have an 1850 and I have scotty flush mounts on them. Works great. Here is how I set it up and how I keep them from popping. The flush mount works with the tarp too so no problems there.
