Do you throw topwater lures all day or just at sunrise and sunset?

My middle son taught me there can not really be a bad time to throw a topwater. I still like a chop if it is sunny out, I would not have confidence in a flat calm sunny day but stranger things have happened.

I think they compliment hair baits well, one guy throwing each. I think I've missed chances by limiting topwater use in my boat to low-light periods. I've got a Mag Hawg Wobbler on order from Rollie's that's due in any day now and I figure I'll use it more at and after the sun sets. I think a TopRaider, Teaser Tail or Tallywhacker should see more water in my boat like ToddM says..."24-7."

Rain, Snow, Sun, Night, Clouds, Wind, Calm all work for me at one time or another the real problem is deciding what to throw

All the time All the time, unless the lake is iced over then I might think about cutting a 25yard hole and throw one then...

Through the warm water months I have a client throwing one at all times. There have been many fish caught in my boat under the bright sun on topwater.

Sworral, care to elaborate on the "serious preferances" for which you choose a topwater in the middle of the day??

How about for clear water, not so much the dark "Goonie stuff", haha.

thx much.

I classify topwater into several categories. The Buzzer type (Topper Stopper) I use when I thnik the fish are very hot, but still move at normal bucktail speed. I really like that bait mid day to early evening, no matter whether it's rough or calm. By the way, take the wire out and install buzzer rivets where the blades ride on the shaft so the blade and rivet are in contact. No paint where the blade and rivet meet. Make the front blade POP, and the rear squeeeeeel. The tail baits (Mud Puppy) I like when I think the fish are tougher any time of the day or night, those baits seem to get a strike when other noisy topwaters won't.I tune them to POP really well at slower speeds. I love the Awaker, but it fouls alot. Norm got me to buy a Top raider, had good luck with that bait this year too. The Dod Turd is a specialty bait I really like anytime it's rough and the fish are in the weeds or on the breaklines in clear water. The Weagle is interesting; it seems to be a good producer and shows me fish almost anytime the fish are going at all ( I have really done well in the early mornings with that thing, it seems to be even with the others in the evening, horse apiece), but it takes MUCH more concentration and work to really make that bait talk to the muskies so I toss it until I get tired and switch off until rested. The Weagle has produced more action over open water for me than all the other topwaters combined, it seems to call the suspendos up like a business cell phone. The REALLY slow topwaters like the Hawg Wobbler or Creeper styles I let Sue throw mostly when it's pretty calm and things are tough, if the fish are going one can cover more water and improve the odds by showing the lure to more fish, but if it's really tough, a Hawg Wobbler seems to make 'em look. They drive me nutz; just is tough for me to fish THAT slow. The Chucky Duck, now that bait is special. I have yet to find an application, but someday...The Wabull and Undertaker are also surface baits for me when I'm seeing nothing on anythig else( I know, those are gliders but not when I'm working them, ask Theedz). They really make you work, but the fish respond well.
