Linda,
What type of areas and baits are you catching your fish on?

Thanks in advance!

Guys,
It appears Linda owns a camp up there, look at her member info and email her direct. It would be cool if we could talk them into a regular report.

You have to drill down into the photo albums to get to the pics but they are there. Some real beasts. Saddly it looks as if many of the fish took quite a beating.

Hi there Rookie:

We did release all of these fish healthy. Some of these fish may look like they are scarred up, but not by mishandling.

Lots of topwater activity. Suicks also.

Fishing mostly thick deep cabbage. Also sand bars and deep breaks.

Linda,
Those are some very nice fish in the pictures but i think what rookie was refering to is the tails and fins on almost all the fish are bleeding very badly and are split that is very hard on the fish.
Are you guys using big enough nets and ones that have been treated ? that will do wonders on not hurting the fish as badly along with not having them out of the water for more than 30 seconds. continue the success.

We use the Kahauna, the biggest and safest net on the market. Alot of these fish are netted green so some damage may occur.

They all go back in the water healthy. We have caught the same fish on more than one occasion.

I am wondering. It seems to me that it is possible that all these fish where handled properly. However, I wonder sometimes what goes on beneath the surface when we get a fish on. for example, i have heard and seen pics of fish that looked damaged but that it occurs "naturally" as they move around their habitat. I find this very hard to believe, a little like a healthy person banging into walls and falling down a lot (ok maybe that was me last friday night but I was not healthy). Anyway, it seems plausable that these fish, especially ones pulled from rocks, are damaging themselves in their life and death struggle to escape.

When I pointed out that the fish looked beat up i was not implying that this was due to improper handling. It would not surprise me if it occured during the fight. Since i have never landed a truely big fish i would be interested to hear the thoughts of those who have and what they have seen as the fish came into the net.

My limited experiences on Lac Seul have proven to me that these fish absolutely go nuts when hooked and fight like dogs to the very end--it is my guestimate that the fin damage is from the fight, not mishandling otherwise.

As someone lucky enough to have fished Lac Seul before the word got out, Brainsx is correct on the savagery of the Muskies in Lac Seul. It was indeed a humbling experience. Even equipped with state of the art tackle of the time, on every cast the lack of confidence in your tackle came to mind. The Muskies always hit so hard that there truly wasn't much skill involved in landing them, it was pure luck and we lost many many more than we landed. It was literally hang on and hope for the best. If they stayed on, they fought all the way to the boat and in the net and in the boat and in taking the hooks out and honestly, getting a picture was a dangerous ordeal. Cutting hooks became more of an act of self- preservaion than anything to do with conservation. Many of us have scars to prove it. Dick Pearson included. So it obviously wasn't a lack of experience deal.
It got so bad that we ended up taking a coffee can, cutting a hole in the bottom, then stuck the long version hook-out thru the hole and duct taped the shaft of the hook-out so your hand was inside the coffee can and protected. Since the first one happened to be a Butternut coffee can, that became the name. A Butternut Hook-Out.
