Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Wow!!! Fishing has been tough with this cold front, but just like I thought, the fishing picked up once the sun came out. Read on to see what I am talking about...... RIGHT MATT!!!
Water temps: droppped about 8 degrees in a week. High 60's in the morning, lower 70's by later afternoon. Sucker time is getting close!!!
Water clarity: getting better on each lake with several feet visibility.
Lure Selection: Jackpots/Weagles in the morning and Grey Ghost, have been hit once again more than other lures. Squirkos have accounted for a few fish as well.
I have been all over this week fishing the Barbee Chain, Tippy, James and Webster through out the week searching for active fish. Fishing has been pretty slow, but usually picking up one fish day, with a shot and one nicer fish throughout the day. 90% of the action has come from shallow flats.
A monster on Tippy has shown herself about 8 times this week, but hasn't got the hooks in her yet!!! She has followed in Jackpots, Weagles and Grey Ghosts. She has tried to eat, but has been unsuccessful, as of yet..... This is a 50 inch class fish......
The fish have their heads buried in the weeds still, and you literally have the land your lure 12 inches from their face to get them to eat. The flats on Webster have been producing most of my fish, The weeds and inside turns along the northeast side have been great on Tippy, and Little Barbee around the campground is stil producing a fish here and there. SHALLOW SHALLOW SHALLOW. Fish are hitting VERY LIGHT, so be ready as I have lost 9 fish this week. What a HEART BREAKER!!!
NOW FOR THE 14th report.........
I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friend Matt Collins from the Chicago area. We fished out of his Tuffy and gave me a break from running the trolling moter. We headed to Tippy/James and has the BEST worst day of my life.
The day started off cloudy, and top water action was picking up. In the first 30 mintues of fishing we had 2 fish over 40 inches try to eat out lures. Matt was throwing the Jackpot and I was throwing the Weagle. With two nice fish blowing up on our lures, we were pretty excited about the day in front of us....
To make a very, very long story short we had 7 fish try to eat the the lures with 6 getting hooks in to all of them. Out of the 6 fished hooked, all but 1 was over 40, and one PIGGY and got off after about a 8 second battle. 6 fish over 40 inches on, fighting them, getting them to the boat, then off. Both me and Matt were both heatbroken and dumb founded. I have never had that many BIG fish hit and get off since I have picked up my first musky rod.
What could have been a CAREER day of 6 fish over 40 with one in the 46-48 class, turned into a a day of heart break and confusion.
I am sure most of you will not believe this story, but next time you see Matt on the water in his Tuffy, stop him and ask him about the day we had on Tippy/James. It was simply amazing.
You had the land your lure directly on the fishes head to get them to eat, as most strikes came within the first 5 feet of the retrieve. Lure selection really didn't matter much. Jackpots, Weagles, Mag Dawgs, Squirkos, Grey Ghost and Phantom all got hit. This was by far the craziest day I have ever had on the water. All of the fish had just one hook, and usually right in front of their beaks. Some came off after a couple of head shakes, but most of them were to the boat and within seconds of being netted. Boy o boy, we sure did SUCK!!!

Location: oswego, il | Been bad for decent fish for us too. In the last 4 saturdays we have caught 19 fish and only one of them has been over 30". We have lost quite a few fish too and the frustrating thing is most all of them were legals. I bet we have lost 10 fish over 36 in those weeks. |

Bring lots of snacks and toys. Get some minnows for them to play with and put them in your livewell. Make it fun for them. You won't get in as much fishing but it will pay huge dividends later. I took my daughter out for 8 hours when she was 4. Just make sure you leave when they say they want to leave. Dont burn them out.
