Subject: Marking Released Fish

I have caught a few fish this year with obvious notches or clippings cut by someone "marking" their release. The last fish had the top of the tail squarley notched. (be like cutting off your big toe in terms of generating power). Besides infection (which was apparent) it just seems silly to mark a catch this way. A picture is good enough.

Anyone else seeing this?

I have seen this on two fish from Petenwell area - Wis. River

I've seen it around here in Nebraska, too. Pike, Musky, Bass, Walleye...

I can't think of a reasonable explanation of why someone would feel the need...

Not positive, but it's probably year class clipping from stocking.

hmm...i know of people who mark caught fish on Petenwell. it's not a stocking/year class thing.
i've never seen a marked fish myself, and i'm not sure why it's done. i'll ask next time i get a chance.

Suspend - how big was the notch on that tail? "cutting off your big toe"? cases i know of are using paper punches, so would be a very small notch.

Haven't figured out how to post a picture or you would see the notch I'm speaking of. Defintely not a stocking mark and I would say the tail notch was top of tail with 1" X2" removed.
