| I have a Abu garcia 5600 high speed retrieve (6:3:1) and I was wondering how often do you need to take them apart and grease them? I just bought it this year and right out of the box it almost souded dry inside. I haven't had any problems with it but sometimes when retrieving really fast with alot of weeds on or alot of drag it sometimes seems like it's grinding. It has been like this since i bought it. I just don't want to have to spend another $$$ for a new one. Is this normal?
Any suggestions?
Thanks, jimus |

I have about a dozen Abu's and have seen your complaint before, possible dry, possible it's the way the gears were cut. If it's the gear cut it may go away in time, gears are brass and will wear in to each other with a little use. Take it apart and have a look...(if your comfortable doing that, they are pretty easy to work on). In most cases I have found them to have too much oil/grease from the factory but yours may have been on the shelf for a while. Be careful not to over grease it... a little goes a long way.
Typically I take mine apart and clean them in the off season..i.e. once a year. I replace all of the drag washers in mine with Smootie - Ultras right out of the box. Other than that you may wear out a pawl or clutch release arm from time to time but I have Abu's that get allot of use and with proper maintenance have given me years of trouble free service.

| No pro, but ditto on Mark's advice. Order the Smooothies from HatterassOutfitters.com and ask them to e-mail an exploded diagram of how to install. The diagram will demonstrate how and where to apply conservative amounts of grease and oil. Also, you can print out better exploded diagrams of your reel from the abu site than you get in the box with your reel. 5000 and 6000 series reels are VERY easy to break down and reassemble, go for it. At least once a year, more if you put in the hours. Last, don't be one of those idiots who drive down the highway with your rods lashed down in your open boat, your reels totally exposed to road dust and grit. |

I agree on too much grease and oil out of the factory. They make them more bullet proof that way for the people who don't know better or ever clean their reels. I strip down a brand new one clean her up and re-lube/oil it. |
