WRMA Update
July 3, 2004

For those who have requested a project “progress report”:

The initial photo analysis is still ongoing. At this stage of the project we are working closely with Visual Geometry Solutions to resolve remaining technical issues before submitting preliminary findings for peer review. Pending peer review, our next goal will be to issue a fairly complete technical account of our findings in a manner accessible to a general readership.

I can appreciate any frustration people might be feeling regarding the timetable we are working with. Please understand that we are just as eager as anyone to see this project finalized.

That said, I would like to reiterate that we do not have any intention towards sacrificing study accuracy in order to gain speed of reporting. To this end, we stand committed to withholding final reporting until our work has received proper peer review. At the current rate of progress, I could provide a rough estimate of at least another several months before we are ready to go public with those findings. Keep in mind, I am talking about photo analysis alone, and that the investigative aspect of this project has a timetable all its own.

I apologize for our lack of public relations lately, but given the long-term nature of this project, we had decided to let the issue "cool down" a bit until our research was further along, not feeling that there was any point of issuing formal press statements to the effect of "we're still working on it." Please be assured that we are fully committed to seeing this project through to completion.

This is an issue that seems to quickly get the attention of every muskie angler in the room whenever it comes up and, seemingly, everyone has an opinion to share. However, as with many things, it is far easier to "take a stand" from the relative safety of an anonymous internet handle, for example, than to actually commit personal time and resources to the task.

To date, the WRMA has been solving the diverse challenges of a very large research project, while simultaneously trying to overcome the very troubling fact that a great deal of the financial and human resources that were initially committed to us have failed to materialize. Simply put, a great many of our most vocal supporters have let us down, and we are left to bridge the gap of time and expense…while still trying to put in enough “time on the water” during the peak of the season to land our own fish of dreams.

Be safe. Best of luck this season…

Thank you,
