| Heading to the Mighty Chip for a week, and fishing the only section I have never really fished. Any suggestions for the last week of June/first week of July?
Thank you in advance

Location: Crystal Lake, IL | My dad is retired and has a place on "The Chip". He usually spends the entire summer up there. Right now a buddy is up for a few weeks and they've been out every day over the last few days. Currently they are moving a bunch of fish. They are seeing alot of their action in Crane Creek which flows from Crane lake into the Flowage. The water is much clearer than your typical flowage so scale your size and color accordingly. They've been moving fish on pacemakers, bucktails, and Black and white crane baits. I hope this helps. Good luck and let me know how you do. A favorite spot of mine is Sand island and Birch island on the West side. Pick up a good map also and put your time on the water and eventully it will happen for you. The Chip is tough to fish but the payoff is huge. Win Big...Lose Big.
Good luck and have a safe trip.

| Thanks Mike, I have fished the Chip since my youth, but this time I will be on the SE side and I usually fish NE and W. Thanks for the advice and I will let you know how we do. It sounds promising!

Location: Crystal Lake, IL | If you're staying on the South East side try around Tiger Island. You probably already knew about Tiger if you've been fishing the chip since your youth but just wanted to throw the idea out there. Tiger island is one of my favorite spots on the flowage. One particular trip a friend and I raised 6 fish and had 2 hook ups off that island in about 2 hrs.
Good luck!

| Steve,
Wish I saw this sooner since you're no doubt there right now. I've been fishing the SE & NW for a fair bit now. When you get back if you're stumped or just want to trade notes I'm at: [email protected]
I really like the SE section since it has the least development. I'm wondering though if the cool temps haven't slowed that part down some this year? I saw way more action in the NW comparatively the last time I was there and the weather went downhill after I left so it'll be warming up right about now so you may have great timing.
Tiger's good and so are some of those humps in that area. Roman's is also good and Cranberry bar can be good. Fishing the areas with cabbage that have deep water access are always good (like Tiger) but with cribs even better (off Little Pete and in Pokegama). Work the main channel and fish the bars, humps and edges (Yankee Joe and mouth to main river heading to the dam). Weeds will be key there. Try the cribs and humps at Church and also try Al's Bar but be careful around those places since you'll lose a lower unit if you don't know the rock humps. Joe's bucktails and Hawg Wobblers for starters. Twitch baits too.
Hoping you're nailing them. |

| Just back from a week on the Chip and for the first time in my life not one follow for the entire week!
Lucky enough I caught a nice 36 inch fish on my last day!
At least now I have fished every section of the flowage and I can't wait to get back. |

| Steve,
Now that you've fished all sections, do you have a favorite? The SE has the least action (IMHO) but possibly the best chance for a truly large one or so I'd like to believe. Sorry to see it stayed slow. I had the same results when I was there. Still, I love that section. John D's redrawn map is useful. A definite aid in learning the SE. |
