Looking at the post for how bad the mosquitos are got me to thinking. (I know, that is always trouble)
I use just the plain old off, and maybe a headnet to keep them away. Last year they weren't that bad by us, so I didn't even need to use Off that much.
This year it may be different. Do you fish with the lights off, or put something on the boat itself to repel them?

I know you all have some good tricks.

I never fish with lights on at night unless a fish is on, or I am switching lures. Your eyes adjust to the night, and the light just attracts bugs. A big old fat, green cigar also does the tricks, but may just be a bit worse for your health than the bug bites!

One last word of advice. Don't be a whimp, and suck it up!

tuffy... try those mosquito coils in the clay pot holders. my cousin and I use those in Canada in the evening and at night and they seem to do pretty well. we usually have one at the fron of the boat and the other in back hidden by seat post so they don't get in the way.

Tuffy 1, I ususally don't have any lights on, but if I do I only have the stern light on and I hang my hat over it to diffuse the light and keep the squites back there. When I don't have the stern light on, I have my console amber light on to help find my way around the boat.

I'm going to try some of the Avon product this year. I hear it is great stuff. It is called, don't laugh, Skin so soft. It is available in a spray bomb so it isnt all over your hands and is available in scentless. I bought some of good old ebay.

Stay indoors..... otherwise I use Muskol preferably with 100% Deet. Just keep it far, far away from tackle.... especially paint jobs. I keep my running lights off unless other boats are nearby. Double check boating regs though as it may not be legal to be anchored(or using trolling motor) with them off depending on where you fish..

Tuffy and others, heed the advice of someone that ruined a graph using spray insect repelents in the boat. Spray insect repellents will leave pits/spots on your graphs, windscreens, and other plastics in the boat. Those spray particles travel a lot further then I thought too. I use off cream from now on.

Oh yeah..... NO BUG SPRAY GETS SPRAYED IN YOUR BOATS.....Heed Lukes warning. When people fish with me and talk bug spray they either put it on before getting near the boat or I'll pull to shore and let you off the boat so you can spray... Rinse your hands before starting to cast again after putting the spray/creams on....

Don't let ANY bug spray get on your baits or on the screen of your fish finder!

Cutter now has cloth wipes in one of those little plastic dispensers, we used them the last few days on a trip in the MI UP. Used the wipes and then washed my hands with tooth paste. Really. Added scent to all baits. My partner, Al Warner, never let the wipe touch the hand he uses to change baits. Worked pretty good. Skeeters were bad at a 6 on a rating of 1 -10, 10 being swarmed by thousands and thousands. If a 10, I would have worn my headnet, raingear, latex gloves, boots, and all seams sealed with duct tape. I've been in a 10 before in Canada, if not fully prepared I would have jumped crazy in the lake. They sounded like a train coming at you from all directions.

I do a lot of night fishing and found out that most of the bug action is just before dark and up to a hour or so after dark.

A couple of hours after dark the bugs go away for the night. This is around here, Southern Wisconsin.

My trick is to troll for the first hour or two and then slip in and cast the areas that held the most bait fish you noticed on your graph while trolling. Muskies seem to slip in shallow at night sometimes and work the weeds, that is when I like to cast for them in summer after dark.

The other thing that works is to fish when there is a wind, stay on the windy areas and fish them the first hour or two after dark then go to your other spots.

Remember, bugs keep other people off the lake, you can have it almost all to yourself if you tough it out.

The Avon Skin so soft does work. My wife sells avon and that is what I use.

It comes in spray or lotion, is DEET free, and they also have it with an SPF of 15, which is good and keeps the flies away during the day!

If anyone is interested you can go to www.youravon.com/rdollish to purchase some.

I don,t know how this would work in a boat, but the hottest new item for hunters is Thermacells, which I believe Cabellas carries. It keeps bugs 20-30 feet completely away from you.I have not seen one bad report on these, and I am definitely going to try for hunting, and in the boat.

i just got my locator back after having a new faceplate installed. wrecked the other one with bug spray. needless to say bug spray is nop longer allowed in my boat!! will be trying the wipes this year. also, not sure where some of you are fishing, but in MN it is illegal to be anchored without stern (anchor) light on, and illegal to be moving without stern and navigation lights on. it sucks having to leave the stern light on cause it messes up your night vision, but better than getting plowed into i geuss.

Skin so Soft is the best way to go. I have been using that for a few years and really like it.

I buy them in the large bottles and just pour them into the smaller spray bottle when it gets low.
Have your wife check it out, if you have one. The big bottles, 1 liter, I believe, sometimes sell for around 7-9 bucks.

Someone showed me an article on using Bounce Dryer sheets to repel bugs. They hang them on their belt, hat pocket etc. They said it works. I have not tried it yet. Let me know if anyone else as tried that.

I researched the Thermacells after seeing them on this post, it seems they have taken quite a hold in the hunting world. I'd say I found about ten personal reviews(from forums, posts, etc), not company made claims, and 9 out of the 10 swore by the things. Saying that literally it kept them mosquito free in a deer blind backed up against a swamp, etc. So mine are in the mail as we speak....will let you know more when I've tried them out.
