Location: Madtown, WI | OK, I know this is out there a ways...but trying to put the calendar together. When does turnover typically happen in Vilas/Onieda countys for the shallower/smaller lakes and for the medium lakes and then the larger lakes?? I typically fish Madison this time of year but with the newly purchased cabin I am Northbound!
I am looking at taking about a week in the third week of Sept. would this be a good time typically?? Also would it be better to take the second trip the first week in October or the third week in October??
Thanks in advance guys for the help!

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I usually never ever use dates as a rule, but by the 2-3rd weekend in October, you should be safely away from turnover. All lakes turnover, but some, like the shallow one I'm on in Land O Lakes, hardly show any effects of it at all. Because the fishing is so consistant thorought the fall, we never thought we even had a turnover.
Shallow lakes should see turnover by the end of Sept, weather depending
Deeper lakes by early October, weather depending
Where is your cabin? |

Location: Madtown, WI | Cabin is near the north end of the willow flowage, 10 minutes to Hazelhurst.
I know I can probably find unturned water or clar water but just wanted to make sure there wasn't a time which I really should avoid.

being on a flowage makes things tougher...you're really going to have to keep an eye on water temps come the beginning of Sept.
Good body of water to be on...congrats on the purchase.

| I fish the St Germain Greater Wisconsin Tourney the first weekend of October every year which takes place on 10 small to medium size shallow to medium depth lakes in both Vilas and Oneida Counties. Every year most lakes are all done turning by then but the larger lakes. I can recall a few years where some of the tourney lakes were turning the first weekend of Oct and very few fish were caught and I can recall years where all 10 lakes were already turned for at least a week and cleared up by the first weekend of Oct and many fish were caught. I'd say if you plan a trip anywhere from the start of the third week of September through the end of the first week of October you risk hitting turnover full force. Before or after those weeks you should be "all clear" ... no pun intended. |
